Two Eagles who were ruled out of Monday’s season opener early last week are back on the practice field.

Offensive tackle Dennis Kelly [back] and cornerback Brandon Hughes [hand] were each participants at practice Wednesday as the Eagles reconvened to prepare for Sunday’s home opener against the Chargers. After practice, Kelly said he did some non-contact individual work. He was listed as limited on the injury report. Hughes practiced in full, according to the report. The only Eagle who didn't practice was cornerback Bradley Fletcher, who sustained a concussion against the Redskins and must pass through league-mandated examinations before he can return.

Kelly, who underwent back surgery in early August, said doctors have cleared him for contact, but he's waiting until next week to put on the pads. Doing individuals this week, he said, is the best way to get back into football shape. He's still not expected to play before Week 4.

"Doctor said its a step-by-step process," Kelly said. "Take it slowly, but keep progressing."

Kelly joined teammates on the practice field last week but only warmed up in a jersey and baseball cap. Depth is important on the offensive line given the fast-paced offense run by head coach Chip Kelly. The Eagles ran 77 plays against the Redskins -- 53 in the first half -- and some of the linemen admitted to feeling fatigued by the third quarter.

Hughes broke his hand against the Jaguars in the third preseason game and then was released Saturday, two days before the opener. The Eagles then re-signed him Monday, a move that enabled them to avoid guaranteeing the cornerback’s full 2013 salary.

Defensive coordinator Bill Davis suggested that Fletcher is making progress and didn’t rule out the veteran corner for Sunday but added that said second-year corner Brandon Boykin would probably start if Fletcher can’t make it back on the field.
