Eagles-Jets bullet points: Limiting drops, penalties key

Share

Breaking down eight key points heading into the Eagles' Week 3 matchup with the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium:

• How has it gone so bad for the Eagles so quickly? One reason is penalties. They have 18 in the first two games, an average of nine. It's tough enough winning in the NFL as is, there's no need to help the opposition out.

• Brian Westbrook brought up an interesting point earlier in the week on Comcast SportsNet's Quick Slants when he said he talked to several scouts around the league and the word on Sam Bradford is if you hit him early, you can take him off his game (see story). It sure did seem to be the case against Dallas. The Cowboys got hits on him early and he was never the same, under- and-overthrowing targets. Of course, it didn't help that his receivers also dropped several passes.

• The sure-handed Jordan Matthews has been not-so-sure through two games with at least three drops. The second-year WR told me he's not concerned about the drops and it will get corrected (see story).

• How shocking is it that the Eagles are dead last in rushing through two weeks? They're averaging 35 yards per game on the ground.

• The Eagles are a minus-1 in the takeaway/giveaway department. The Jets have 10 takeaways in two games (see story).

• The Eagles' ground game has lost yardage on 21 percent of its plays.

• The Eagles have yet to prove they have a vertical threat. Matthews, Nelson Agholor and Josh Huff will be tested by Darrelle Revis — if he plays; he's listed as questionable — Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine.

• The good news for the Eagles' defense is wide receiver Eric Decker (knee) and running back Chris Ivory (quad) are questionable for Sunday. The possible bad news is rookie wide receiver Devin Smith could make his NFL debut. Smith has been out since training camp with fractured ribs and a partially punctured lung. He's a burner.
