When Chip Kelly coaches his first game on the Eagles’ sideline, Bill Belichick will be standing across the field.
The Eagles will open the 2013 preseason the weekend of Aug. 8-11 against the Patriots at the Linc, the NFL announced Thursday.
Kelly and Belichick have known each other for years, and Belichick has brought Kelly into the Patriots’ facility in the past to tutor him and the other New England coaches on the intricacies of the unique up-tempo offense he ran at Oregon.
The Eagles also have a home preseason game the weekend of Aug. 15-19 at the Linc against the Panthers, with head coach Ron Rivera and defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.
The final two preseason games will be on the road – Week 3 at Jacksonville (Aug. 22-25) and Week 4 against the Jets (Aug. 29-30).
Exact dates for all the games will be finalized in the next few days.
This will be the 13th consecutive year the Eagles will finish the preseason against the Jets and the 29th time in the last 29 years the Eagles have faced the Jets in the preseason. They didn’t meet in 2000 but played twice in 1992, including the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.
The Eagles faced the Patriots last year in Foxboro and played the Panthers in the 2007 and 2008 preseasons, both at the Linc.
Although the Eagles have played the Jaguars recently in the preseason – 2008 and 2009 – they haven’t played a preseason game in Jacksonville in 40 years, since Aug. 4, 1973, when they beat the Bills 13-6. They also had a preseason game in Jacksonville on Sept. 6, 1958, losing to the Redskins 35-31.
