Eagles release cornerback Cary Williams

Cary Williams will have more time to attend his daughter’s dance recitals and oversee installation of the sconces in his new home.

The Eagles released the controversial cornerback Tuesday after two seasons.

Williams signed a three-year, $17 million contract in 2013 and was due to make $6.5 million in 2015.

Williams carries $1.667 million in dead money against the Eagles’ 2015 salary cap but had an $8.1667 million cap hit if the Eagles had kept him. So the move clears out $6.5 million in cap space.

“They didn't give me a chance to take a pay cut or come back to the team,” Williams said on radio station WPEN-FM, according to the station’s Twitter account. “That's their decision.”

With safety Nate Allen and cornerback Bradley Fletcher both due to become free agents this weekend, safety Malcolm Jenkins is now the only member of the Eagles’ 2014 starting secondary under contract.

Williams, 30, started all 32 games over the past two years and had five interceptions, but he became better known for committing ill-timed penalties and making outlandish comments than anything he did on the field.

While he wasn’t as awful as Fletcher, it was clear as last season went on he had become a liability.

Williams won a Super Bowl with the Ravens in 2012, but his next team will be his fourth in seven years. He originally entered the NFL with the Titans in 2008 as a seventh-round pick out of Washburn College

In the past week, the Eagles have cleared out $13.3 million -- $4 million for tight end James Casey, $2.8 million for offensive lineman Todd Herremans and $6.5 million for Williams.

The only corners the Eagles now have under contract are Brandon Boykin, Nolan Carroll and Jaylen Watkins.

The Eagles should now have about $33 million available under their 2015 adjusted cap.

The Eagles' 2015 adjusted cap figure is $159,872,378. That includes $15,715,700 in 2014 carryover. They have the third-highest adjusted cap figure in the NFL.
