Eagles OTA notes: Vick tired of injury questions

Share

Mike Vick has played all 16 games just once in his NFL career and much has been made about his often reckless playing style, his turnovers and health.

Vick has heard those questions since he took over as the Eagles starting quarterback and hes tired of them.

I really dont think I need to discuss what type of game Im gonna play, Vick said on Friday, the final day of the Eagles second OTA. Its gonna be what its gonna be. It seems like the questions are becoming repetitive and Im tired of answering them because the only thing we can do is wait and see if Im gonna play more disciplined in games.

The topic of his health and style arose on Friday after a recent WIP interview on the same topic.

Vick said he understands the criticism that comes with being a starting quarterback in the NFL, especially in Philadelphia, but also admitted sometimes those criticisms feel like personal shots against him.

I understand the responsibility and role that comes with being a quarterback, and I accept it, he said. Sometimes I just dont accept people saying things that they dont really know about.

If Vick isnt able to play all 16 games, its likely Mike Kafka or Nick Foles, who dont have an NFL start combined, who will need to step in.

Im getting them both ready to play, Vick said. If something happens and they need to go in and play, I feel like its my responsibility, as the leader of this team, to make sure the guys in the film room with me are ready to play just as well as I am. Im having a lot of fun with them, theyre very in-tune with whats going on.

This and that

Play of the day: Riley Cooper came across the middle and Kafka threw the ball high and behind him. Cooper made an acrobatic catch while leaning backward but never hit the ground.

Play of the day II: Vick hit DeSean Jackson about 50-plus yards downfield. Jackson burned Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and even out-ran the ball. He had to come back to get it.

Play of the day III: Darryl Tapp dropped back in coverage and deflected a pass in the air. Nnamdi Asomugha dove and caught the ball before it hit the ground. Asomughas play led to the defense chanting, Nnamdi! Nnamdi!

Quote of the day: Hes what I thought he was. He gets after it.Eagles rookie defensive tackle Fletcher Cox on defensive line coach Jim Washburn.

Stupid observation of the day: Asante Samuel used to be the loudest Eagle on the practice field. Now, that honor goes to defensive end Darryl Tapp. Tapp has been yelling throughout most of the practicesduring plays, on the sideline, he doesnt much care.

On Friday during a broken down special teams play, he rolled away from the line and ran downfield. When free agent punterholder Ryan Tydlacka, who wears No. 4, held onto the ball, Tapp yelled, Throw the ball, four. I was open!

Kafka had a wild day throwing the ball. A lot of his passes were too high or behind receivers. Foles had another solid day passing the ball. He hit some targets downfield. Trent Edwards slowly shakes more rust off. He wasnt noticeably bad Friday.

Damaris Johnson, a rookie free agent wide receiver out of Tulsa, has turned some heads. Hes a smaller guy, 5-8, but hes been getting a lot of balls thrown his way. And, more importantly, hes been catching them. He might be that guy this year. You know, the guy who probably doesnt have a chance to make the team but performs well now and during training camp. Last year, it was Sinorice Moss.

Brett Brackett has been getting quite a few looks too. The Eagles brought him in as a free agent during last season as a practice squad player. Hes a tight end, 6-5, 246, and has good hands. Brackett, a Penn Stater, was brought in last season amid the PSU sex scandalJoe Paterno firing. On his first day, he probably got the most media attention an undrafted free agent pickup has ever gotten.

The Eagles will be back in action for the last of the teams OTAs on Monday. They have practice Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Then, theres a three-day mini camp the following week. After that, the team wont be all together again until training camp. Rookies, quarterbacks and injured players report to Lehigh on July 22. Everyone else gets there on July 25.
