The Eagles have made a monumental change to their organization.

Joe Banner, according to Philly.com, is out as the team's president.

A press conference is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

According to the report, Banner will remain part of the organization as a strategic adviser to owner Jeffrey Lurie but will be permitted to look for other jobs outside the team. Banner will be replaced by chief operating officer Don Smolenski, who will become president. General manager Howie Roseman will handle all of the team's salary cap and contract negotiations.

Banner, 59, has been a member of the front office since 1994, when Lurie bought the team. The two became friends as children.

"Joe's a free agent now," Lurie told Philly.com Wednesday.

Banner referred to himself as "an employed free agent" and wants to "get involved with the world of buying and selling a sports team with the possibility of becoming part of a group that buys a team."

The reasons behind the shakeup are not clear, although Lurie said it was not the result of a power struggle involving Roseman and head coach Andy Reid.

"No, the opposite," Lurie said. "It was all done, I think, for what's best for everybody involved."
