The Eagles last week were one of several NFL teams to work out free-agent defensive tackle Armond Armstead, a team source confirmed.

Armstead most recently played for the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League, where he recorded six sacks and helped Toronto win the leagues championship. He had played three seasons at Southern California but missed his senior year because of a medical condition.

Armstead, 22, also worked out last week for the Patriots and Colts last week, according to an ESPN report, and is expected to sign this week.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Armstead can play the three technique in a conventional 4-3 scheme or slide outside and the play five technique in a 3-4, which means hes versatile and can probably play in any scheme.

The Eagles played the 4-3 scheme in their past 14 seasons under coach Andy Reid, who was fired on Dec. 31. As they continue to seek a new head coach, its uncertain what defensive alignment they will employ going forward.

NFL teams have had some recent success finding talent in the Canadian League. Dolphins pass rusher Cameron Wake, signed out of Canada before the 2009 season, has 43 sacks in 47 games and is headed to his second Pro Bowl. He had a career-best 15 sacks this season.

Colts linebacker Jerrell Freeman, who spent three seasons with Saskatchewan, recorded 145 tackles, two sacks and an interception this season.

The Eagles signed defensive Phillip Hunt from Canada two years ago after his 16-sack season for Winnipeg. Hunt has survived a crowded defensive end picture and made the team each of the past two seasons.

Armstead headed to Canada to prove that he was in good enough condition to play at the professional level after he suffered a heart attack in college. He is suing Southern California, according to ESPN, alleging that painkillers he took caused a heart attack and threatened his future pro potential.
