Source: Reid & KC make progress, but no deal yet

The Chiefs and Andy Reid met past midnight Thursday night into Friday morning and resolved many key issues leading toward Reid becoming head coach of the Chiefs, although as of early Friday morning, no agreement had been reached, according to a league source.
They made a lot of progress, but its not done, the source said.Reid met with Chiefs brass for much of the day Wednesday and again for most of the day Thursday.Meanwhile, Reid scrapped plans to meet with the Cards and Chargers, who had also been planning to interview Reid, and no other candidates emerged on the Chiefs radar.The Chiefs interviewed Falcons special teams coach Keith Armstrong to fulfill their Rooney Rule requirement to meet with at least one minority candidate.Reid was fired by the Eagles Monday after 14 years as head coach. The Chiefs fired head coach Romeo Crennel Monday after just one 2-14 season following three games in 2011 as interim coach. Reid almost immediately emerged as the Chiefs top candidate.Reid won more playoff games during the nine-year stretch from 2000 through 2008 (10) than the Chiefs have won in their 53-year history (eight). The Chiefs havent won a postseason game since 1993, when Joe Montana took them to the AFC Championship Game, where they lost to the Bills.The Chiefs front office has two prominent former Eagles executives. Team president Mark Donovan spent 2003 through 2008 as the Eagles senior vice president of business operations, and Chiefs vice president of media and marketing Rob Alberino spent the 1997 through 2009 seasons with the Eagles, where he founded the Eagles Television Network.In an interview on the Chiefs web site, owner Clark Hunt, whos leading the Chiefs search committee, described what hes looking for in the 12th head coach in franchise history:I want somebody whos a proven leader, Hunt said. Somebody who has been a part of building a successful program, somebody whos an effective communicator and teacher, somebody who has a high football IQ and is willing to roll up his sleeves and really work hard, somebody who will hold himself accountable, as well as his coaches and the team and then finally, somebody of high character, somebody with a lot of integrity.
Obviously, you would like to hire somebody and have him spend the rest of his career with you and that will certainly be our goal as we go into this process, to find somebody who can be with us for the long-term. I am a strong believer in continuity, and if you can find the right individual in the coaching position, it allows you to have continuity.
