Add Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly to the ever-growing list of Eagles head coaching candidates.According to two league sources, the Eagles have already met with Kelly, who has a 28-11 record in three seasons in South Bend. Notre Dames season ended Monday night with a 42-14 loss to Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game in Miami, and the Eagles met secretly with Kelly the next day.
Kelly, 51, becomes the 10th known candidate to replace Andy Reid, fired last week after 14 seasons.Kelly coached 13 years at Grand Valley State, where he went 118-35-2 with no losing seasons. He spent three years at Central Michigan (19-16 record) and four at Cincinnati (34-6) before moving to Notre Dame after the 2009 season. In 22 years as a head coach, Kelly has had just one losing season -- 4-7 his first year at Central Michigan, in 2004.The Eagles had no comment on the report. The Eagles interest in Kelly was first reported by The Inquirer.Kelly would become the third college coach the Eagles have approached about their head coaching vacancy. They also interviewed Chip Kelly, who returned to Oregon, and Bill OBrien, who returned to Penn State.Like Chip Kelly, Brian Kelly has no NFL experience as a player or assistant coach. The Eagles have not had a head coach with no NFL experience either coaching or as a player since Bert Bell in 1936.
