Gunn's Bullet Points: Eagles' O fast and furious

Share

Here are nine bullet points after Chip Kelly's first regular-season game as the Eagles' head coach:

• Nineteen offensive plays on their first two drives, 30 plays in the first quarter, 53 plays at halftime and 322 yards of offense in the first 30 minutes. The Eagles' offensive numbers were staggering, fast and furious, and enough to make the math majors race for calculators just to keep up.

• Kudos to the offensive line -- solid protection for Michael Vick and gaping holes for running backs to spring through.

• Speaking of running backs, LeSean McCoy had 20 carries in the first half, which in the past was a game’s worth of carries. No. 25 had 31 total carries for 184 yards and averaged 5.9 yards per carry (see story).

• Did you know that McCoy's 115 rushing yards after the first 30 minutes of the game made him the league's leading rusher after Week 1? Maybe Jason Peters was right when he said Shady can easily get over 1,000 yards early in the season.

• While I give Vick props for running down the field blocking, it's not what you want to see. By the fourth quarter Monday night, Vick was still taking hits and getting up slower.

• A big question mark on defense was what would Trent Cole look like playing linebacker? The answer was more than favorable: four tackles, one tackle for a loss, two quarterback hits, one forced fumble and he was credited with a safety (see story).

• Mychal Kendricks was a beast in the middle, applying pressure on Robert Griffin III and leading the team with 10 total tackles.

• Cary Williams had been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. But you cannot overlook his contributions to the defensive effort. He was aggressive in coverage -- snagging an acrobatic interception -- and had a sack.

• Overall, an entertaining season opener to watch. All three phases -- offense, defense and special teams -- played well. If the Eagles keep getting that type of effort all season, dare we utter the word playoffs?
