25 Random Eagles Points: Atlanta edition

Share

Live, from Atlanta, its this weeks edition of 25 Random Points!

Atlantas a weird place. They actually have Braves fans here. Seriously. Theyre all over the place. They have Smoltz and Glavine jerseys and everything.

I want to just openly laugh at them.

OK, 25 Random Points -- here we go:

1. Very cool moment in the locker room after the Eagles-Rams game, with LeSean McCoy, Duce Staley and Michael Vick all standing at Shadys locker comparing notes about their opening-day 100-yard rushing games -- Duce in 1999 and 2000, Vick in 2010 (and temporarily in 2011) and McCoy in 2011. Yeah, but Duce, he had 200, so hes still got us, McCoy said. Thats when Vick looked at Duce in awe. You had 200 yards on opening day? Duce, who ran for a career-high 201 yards in Dallas in the famed Pickle Juice game in 2000, smiled and nodded. And McCoy, as talented an Eagles historian as running back added: Actually, 201. How cool is it that he knows this stuff?

2. When Shady rushes for more than 65 yards, the Eagles are 10-0. When he doesnt, the Eagles are 12-12.

3. I hate domes. Always have, always will. This is not how football is supposed to be played.

4. Since 2000, the Eagles have 58 road wins. Only the Colts (59) have more during the same period. The Eagles have played .657 football on the road over the past 12 years. Since 2000, only two teams (Patriots, .718, and Colts, .706) have been better overall than the Eagles have been on the road.

5. Danny Watkins reaction to getting benched bothered me more than the fact that he was struggling so much and had to be benched. Honestly, Im kind of glad that it happened, Watkins told my CSNPhilly.com colleague Andy Schwartz Sunday. I get what hes saying, but kind of wish he was pissed.

6. And by the way, dont compare Danny Watkins to Antone Davis. Antone started every game at right tackle as a rookie for a 10-6 team.

7. Since beating the Eagles in the 2009 playoffs, Tony Romo is 1-7.

8. Nonetheless, the Cowboys are the only team in the NFC East that scares me a little bit.

9. If the Eagles beat the Falcons, theyll be 5-0 going into the Redskins game.

10. Asante Samuel raised an interesting question the other day in the locker room: Hey, has anybody ever guaranteed a loss?

11. Jason Babin played a few games for the Eagles in 2009, spent 2010 with the Titans and has played one game this year in his return to Philly. Nonetheless, only three Eagles have more sacks than Babins 4 since the start of the 2009 season (Trent Cole 23 12, Juqua Parker 14, Darren Howard 6). Thats frightening.

12. Vick on Sunday will become the first Eagle to start at quarterback against his former team since ... hmmm ... how about since Doug Pederson started against the Dolphins in 1999? Wish this question had a better answer, like Rodney Peete vs. the Lions in 1995 or Jaws vs. the Rams in 1986. Something else.

13. If you had one game to win and you could have any Eagles quarterback in his prime (as an Eagle), who would you go with?

14. If DeSean Jackson has 1,200 receiving yards this year, hell rank sixth in Eagles history by the end of the season, behind only Harold Carmichael, Mike Quick, Pete Retzlaff, Ben Hawkins and Fred Barnett. Sixth all-time? A month after his 25th birthday? SignThisMan

15. Think Im actually more concerned right now with Chas Henry than Alex Henery.

16. Speaking of kickers, old friend David Akers was 4 for 4 on field goal attempts for the 49ers on opening day, improving his career percentage from 81.9 percent to 82.1 percent. That made him one of only 14 kickers in NFL history over 82 percent for their career (minimum 200 attempts). Last time Akers was over 82 percent was early in the 2006 season. With two more field goals, Akers will become the ninth kicker in NFL history to make 300 in his career.

17. Last time the Eagles had two Pro Bowl defensive ends, their names were Reggie and Clyde.

18. This is the first time in Nnamdi Asomugha's career he's been 1-0.

19. Evan Mathis. Twitter Hall of Fame.

20. The Phillies won 92 or more games five times during the 125-year period from 1883 through 2007. Theyve won 92 or more games four times since 2008.

21. Brent Celek has really turned himself into a terrific blocker. He may never catch 76 passes again, like he did in 2009, but he might be even more valuable now.

22. Clay Harbor, a couple big catches against the Falcons. Just a hunch.

23. I expect Jason Peters to play Sunday, but I kind of like King Dunlap as a backup left tackle. He has to watch his technique and stay low so pass rushers dont get under him and gain leverage, but when he does, he really battles and has great power.

24. I cant help thinking that the two-out, two-strike home run he gave up with a 1-0 lead in the top of the ninth Wednesday night could cost Cliff Lee the Cy Young Award.

25. Last time the Eagles were 2-0 going into their home opener was 1949. That was a pretty good year.
