Eagles by the Numbers: McCoy climbs charts

Share

With two terrific games to open the 2011 season, LeSean McCoy continues to climb his way up the all-time NFL yards-per-carry list.

McCoy has 33 carries for 217 yards this year, a 6.6 average thats raised his career rushing average up to a lofty 4.90 yards per carry.

Among running backs with 300 or more carries, McCoy now ranks 12th in NFL history in yards per carry.

Of the 28 modern pure running backs enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, only two had a higher career rushing average than McCoyJim Brown (5.29) and Gale Sayers (5.00). A third, Bobby Mitchell, averaged 4.94 but spent most of his career at flanker.

Among those, McCoys average is higher than are O.J. Simpson (4.67), Jim Taylor (4.46), Eric Dickerson (4.43), Walter Payton (4.36), Tony Dorsett (4.34), Marshall Faulk (4.33), Earl Campbell (4.30), Emmitt Smith (4.16) and Franco Harris (4.11).

Crazy numbers for Maclin
Even though Jeremy Maclin is only two years and two games into his NFL career, hes already putting up numbers that are up there with any other receiver in Eagles history.

Maclin, who had 159 yards against the Falcons last year and 171 on Sunday, became the third Eagle with two career receiving games of 150 or more yards against the same team.

Harold Jackson did it vs. the Giants (194 in 1970 and 152 in 1972) and Tommy McDonald vs. the Cards (187 in 1961 and 162 in 1962).

Maclin already has as many career games with 150 or more yards as Mike Quick, generally regarded as the greatest receiver in modern Eagles history.

With two TD catches Sunday, Maclin became only the sixth player in NFL history with five or more multiple-TD-catch games before his 24th birthday. Only Randy Moss (nine), Bobby Hayes (six) and John Jefferson (six) had more games with more than one TD catch than Maclin before their 24th birthday. Gary Collins and Hall of Famer Mike Ditka, who both played in the 1960s, also had five.

After 35 NFL games (including the playoffs), Maclin has 149 catches for 2,138 yards and 17 touchdowns. After 35 games, Jackson had 139 catches for 2,300 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Maclin needs 61 catches the rest of the season to break Keith Jacksons franchise record of 209 receptions in a players first three NFL seasons. He needs only 40 to break Jacksons mark for most by a wide receiver.

In Eagles history, 18 players have had 150 yards in a game, and seven of them have done it while Reid was the coachDeSean Jackson and Terrell Owens three times, Maclin twice and Jason Avant, Hank Baskett, Kevin Curtis and Brian Westbrook once each.

Under the Eagles four previous coachesRay Rhodes, Rich Kotite, Buddy Ryan and Dick Vermeilonly five players had 150-yard games (Fred Barnett, Calvin Williams, Cris Carter, Quick, Harold Carmichael).

Longest completion since ... who?
Mike Kafkas 43-yard completion to Maclin Sunday was the longest by an Eagle making his NFL debut as a passer in 25 years.

Who had a longer pass in his first game in which he threw a pass? How about tailback Keith Byars, whose first NFL pass attempt was a 55-yard touchdown to Quick against the Rams on Sept. 28, 1986.

Sacks already piling up
With five sacks from the defensive line against the Rams and four against the Falcons, the Eagles have recorded consecutive games with four or more sacks by the defensive linemen for the first time since Jim Johnson was defensive coordinator.

The last time it happened was the first two weeks of 2006, when the linemen had four sacks on opening day in Houston (Trent Cole two and Jevon Kearse and Juqua Parker one apiece) and eight a week later against the Giants (Cole two, Kearse 2 , Mike Patterson 1 , Parker and Darwin Walker one each).

The Eagles have gotten more sacks from their defensive linemen in two weeks this year (nine) than in their last six games last year (seven).

Big yardage margin in a loss
The Eagles lost to the Falcons Sunday despite outgaining them by 129 yards. Thats the fourth-largest yardage margin the Eagles have had under Reid in a game theyve lost. Oddly, Matt Bryant has been the opposing kicker in two of those four games.

The Eagles outgained the Buccaneers by 310 yards in 2006 (506-196) before losing 23-21 on Bryants 62-yard field goal. They also lost to the Jaguars 28-25 in 2002 despite outgaining them by 139 yards (406-207) and lost to the Chargers 31-23 in 2009 after outgaining San Diego.

Overall, the Eagles are 41-4-1 under Reid when they outgain their opponent by at least 100 yards.

The Eagles 447 yards is the 12th-most in franchise history in a game theyve lost. However, theyre 4-5 the last nine times theyve netted 447 or more yards.

This and that
Before Sunday night, the Eagles were 104-4-1 in their last 109 games in which they scored at least 31 pointsa streak that dated back to 1965. ... Asante Samuels 50 interceptions (including playoffs) are sixth-most in NFL history by a player 30 years old or younger. The top five: Paul Krause (60), Bobby Boyd (58), Ronnie Lott (56), Everson Walls (53) and Lem Barney (51). Krause, Lott and Barney are Hall of Famers. Samuels INT Sunday moved him into the all-time Eagles top-10, one behind Joe Scarpati. ... Matt Ryan threw four TD passes against the Eagles despite passing for only 195 yards. Hes the first QB ever to throw four TDs against the Eagles without throwing for 200 yards. The fewest previous passing yards by a QB throwing four touchdowns against the Eagles was 202, by Danny White in 1980.
