Reid: I'm ‘a part of' the problem

Andy Reid got them into this mess. And he promises hes going to get them out of it.

Reid, calling himself a part of the problem, said Monday that he will continue to evaluate personnel and schemes and every other facet of the franchise but also blamed himself for the Eagles three consecutive losses, all games that they led in the fourth quarter.

Weve got to make sure we fix it, Reid said. I obviously dont like what Im seeing, and Im a part of that problem.

The Eagles, 1-3 and in last place in the NFC East, are already a longshot to reach the playoffs. Only 15 percent of the 144 teams to open a season 1-3 since the current NFL playoff format went into effect in 1990 have reached the postseason. Only one -- the 2001 Patriots -- has reached or won a Super Bowl.

And with two 3-1 teams up next -- both on the road -- the Eagles are realistically in danger of what would be only their third 1-5 start since 1975.

I dont think that things wont turn around, Reid said. Im not in the business of doing that. Im in the business of finding the problems and solving the problems.

I know weve got good enough players and good enough coaches to do it. Ive seen enough glimpses of this thing to know what it can be when its operating right, and its important that we get it there. Weve all got a responsibility to do that.

Going back to last year, the Eagles have lost six of their last seven games and, incredibly, five straight at home. Thats their longest home losing streak since they lost five in a row over the end of 1994 and the beginning of 1995, a period that spanned the end of the Rich Kotite era and the start of Ray Rhodes coaching tenure.

Their last longer home losing streak was a seven-game stretch at the Vet in 1983.

Im going to tell you, if I could point to one thing, and its a tough thing to do, weve all got to do our jobs better, Reid said. Thats what we need to do. I think we have the players here, we have the coaches here to do that. Now weve got to do it.

The issues?

Countless.

1) Turnover ratio. The Eagles are minus-six, which is second-worst in the NFL (the Steelers are minus-10). They have only two interceptions, tied for 24th-most. Meanwhile, the Eagles have committed 10 turnovers -- only the Broncos and Steelers (with 11) have more.

2) Red-zone offense. The Eagles have just eight TDs in 21 trips inside the opposing 20-yard-line. Thats 23rd-best in the league.

3) Red-zone defense. Opposing teams have scored eight TDs in 10 red-zone trips, for 80 percent -- worst in the league.

4) Rush defense. The Eagles are 30th in rush defense and 31st in rushing yards per attempt. Every opponent has gained at least 100 yards.

5) Bizarre play calls. From the failed fourth-and-1 against the Giants when the Eagles just needed to put the Giants deep, to the Owen Schmitt runs at the goal line to the Ronnie Brown run-pass option, Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg have made some inexplicable play calls the past few weeks.

6) The rookie kicker. Alex Henery had two fourth-quarter chances to clinch a win Sunday and missed from 33 and 39 yards out. Thats inexcusable.

7) The linebackers. They have zero big plays in four games. And going back, Eagles linebackers have one sack in the last 12 games and one interception in the last 25 games. Not to mention their tackling has been atrocious.

8) Fourth-quarter collapses. The Eagles have been outscored 36-0 in the fourth quarter of their last three games, blowing a lead in all three.

9) The offseason acquisitions. Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie have been disappointing so far. Steve Smiths drop led to a crucial interception against the Giants. Ronnie Browns incomprehensible fumble cost the Eagles a game against the 49ers. Vince Young hasnt played, but he is responsible for that ill-advised Dream Team tag that seems to be weighing the team down. Other than Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins, none of the Eagles six offseason Pro Bowl acquisitions has paid off yet.

10) Big plays. The Eagles have already allowed 14 offensive plays of 25 yards or more, including runs of 37, 40, 47 and 61 yards and passes of 26, 26, 28, 30, 31, 32, 38, 40, 44 and 74 yards. As recently as 2008, the Eagles didnt allow a single run from scrimmage of 30 yards all year. Now theyve given up four by Week 4.

Its not one thing.

I look at everything, Reid said. Im evaluating everything.

The most confounding thing about the Eagles is that theyre capable of looking so good at times and so bad at other times.

Other than the opener against a winless Rams team, they have yet to put together a complete, 60-minute game.

On Sunday, the 49ers didnt score a touchdown until the middle of the third quarter. Then, after building a 20-point lead, the Eagles allowed three drives of 77 yards or more in the next 19 minutes.

To the NFLs lowest-ranked offense.

We saw some good things in the first half, Reid said. What weve got to learn is how to carry that over into the second half and in particular through the fourth quarter, where weve been terrible.

Each guy needs to take a close look at himself and Ive got to make sure Im looking at it even closer, because were not finishing games the way were supposed to finish games, thats the bottom line.
