Fred Smoot think it's time for one of the biggest couples in Washington to break up.

The couple, of course, is Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III and head coach Mike Shanahan.

Appearing on a local radio show on 106.7 The Fan (via The Washington Post), Smoot — a Redskin for seven years who retired after the 2009 season, just before Shanahan took the Washington job — compared the coach and quarterback to a constantly quarreling couple:

"RGIII and Shanahan don't get along," Smoot offered. "They the couple that we invite to dinner and they always arguing. We know this couple don't have a chance. It won't be a year or two before they talking about divorce and it's not gonna shock any of us."

And if one of them has got to go?

"Robert Griffin III has been a Redskin now for one and a half years. If you gonna change his coach and you want a coach to grow with him like the Bradys and Belichicks and all the great pairs of quarterbacks and coaches, you have to do it now," Smoot said. "And right now, I think the Red Lobster's working his way outta here. I think Shanahan is working his way out of here."

Too bad that nickname couldn't have been coined sooner. Then there would have been the Red Lobster, Red Face and Big Red all in one division.

Smoot didn't pin all the blame on Shanahan, either, handing down some unsympathetic words for RGIII:

"Sometimes RGIII can be a brat, all right?" Smoot said. "Because I'm watching these other quarterbacks and I'm watching how they compose themselves and the things they do. With Luck and Wilson, and it's a different vibe. Sometimes I'm starting to think that RGIII is really, really buying into the attention. But I tell anybody this: The NFL will humble you. And I think he's going through that humbling process right now as we speak."

Didn't these guys just win the NFC East a year ago? Guess that's what an 0-3 start can do.
