CONROE, Texas -- Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson will avoid jail time after reaching a plea agreement in his child abuse case.

A judge agreed to the plea deal during a hearing Tuesday in Conroe, 40 miles north of Houston.

Peterson was indicted in September for using a wooden switch to discipline his 4-year-old son earlier this year in suburban Houston. The All-Pro running back was charged with felony injury to a child and had faced up to two years in prison if convicted.

Under the agreement, Peterson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of reckless assault.

Peterson says he never intended to harm his son and was disciplining him in the same way he had been as a child growing up in East Texas. (see full story)

Panthers: DE Hardy's trial moved to 2015
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Mecklenburg District Attorney's office spokeswoman Meghan Cooke has announced the Nov. 17 jury trial involving Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy has been moved to 2015.

Cooke said in a release Tuesday that a new trial date has not been set. Several media outlets reported last week the trial would be moved.

Hardy is appealing his July 15 conviction on charges of assault on a female and communicating threats. The Panthers placed Hardy on the exempt-commissioner's permission list Sept. 17 and he cannot play for Carolina until his situation is resolved.

The release says the court's docket is filled with cases still being heard, prompting the move. Cooke says in the release, "The District Attorney's Office must now adjust the dockets in several courtrooms, affecting multiple cases."

The 33-year-old Polamalu walked off the field and returned briefly before heading to the locker room. Polamalu has 51 tackles this season. He will be replaced by Will Allen on Sunday when the Steelers (6-3) face the reeling Jets (1-8).

Bengals: Still's daughter to attend Bengals game Sunday
CINCINNATI -- Devon Still figures it will be the most emotional game he'll ever play.

The Bengals defensive tackle will have his 4-year-old daughter, Leah, watching from a seat at Paul Brown Stadium on Thursday night when Cincinnati (5-2-1) hosts the Cleveland Browns (5-3). The girl is being treated for cancer.

After the first quarter, the team will present a check for more than $1 million to Children's Hospital for cancer treatment and research. The money was raised from sales of Still's jersey.

On Sunday, Still supported collegiate basketball player Lauren Hill by wearing her name on his eye black strips. Hill is a freshman at Mount St. Joseph who has inoperable brain cancer. She scored two baskets in her first game. (see full story)
