NFL Notes: Bills quickly re-sign QB Matt Cassel

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Quarterback Matt Cassel is back with the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills announced they re-signed the 11-year journeyman Tuesday, a few days after Cassel was among the final players cut by the team.

Cassel was released after losing the three-way quarterback competition to Tyrod Taylor, who was named the starter last week. Cassel was also scheduled to make a base salary of $4.15 million, which was deemed too expensive for a backup.

Now Cassel will compete with former starter EJ Manuel to serve as the prime backup on Sunday, when Buffalo opens the season by hosting Indianapolis.

The Bills acquired Cassel in a trade with Minnesota in March.

To make room for Cassel's addition, the Bills released tight end Nick O'Leary, their second of two sixth-round draft picks.

Cowboys: QB Kellen Moore joins practice squad
IRVING, Texas — The Cowboys have added a second quarterback to their practice squad in Kellen Moore, a veteran who will be reunited with Dallas offensive coordinator Scott Linehan.

Moore, who signed Tuesday, was an undrafted free agent with Detroit in 2012, when Linehan was the Lions' offensive coordinator. The former Boise State quarterback didn't play in the regular season in three years before Detroit waived him Saturday.

Undrafted rookie Jameill Showers, who played special teams in the preseason, is the other quarterback on the practice squad. Dallas also added running back Gus Johnson, the team's preseason rushing leader.

The Cowboys' other practice squad additions were in camp with other teams: receivers Vince Mayle and Rodney Smith (Cleveland) and linebacker Joe Thomas (Green Bay).

Browns: Suspended coach involved in assault complaint
BEREA, Ohio — The city prosecutor's office is reviewing an assault allegation involving suspended Browns offensive line coach Andy Moeller.

According to an incident report, police were called to a local residence Saturday night to investigate a woman's claim she had been assaulted. Police spoke to both parties and got "conflicting stories." Police add that no injuries were observed and the woman was taken to a hotel.

Later, the woman contacted police to say she was injured and wanted to press charges. She signed an assault complaint before changing her mind.

Moeller was not arrested and his name was redacted from the report.

The Browns suspended Moeller indefinitely Monday. He's in his second season with Cleveland. When he was with Baltimore in 2011, Moeller was suspended two games by the NFL for a drunken-driving conviction.
