NFL Notes: DeSean Jackson (hamstring) could miss 3-4 weeks

ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson could miss three to four weeks after straining his left hamstring early in the team's season-opening loss.

"Possibly, it could be shorter, but you just never know with hamstrings," coach Jay Gruden said Monday.

"You hate to lose a star, especially with his speed," Gruden said. "We feel good about the receivers that take his place, but nobody can substitute him for that burning speed that gets down field and scares safeties and corners to death," (see full story).

Cardinals: Ellington has sprained knee
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona Cardinals running back Andre Ellington has a sprained right knee, an injury that's less serious than initially feared.

"He has a mild sprain PCL (posterior cruciate ligament)," coach Bruce Arians said. "There's no timetable. It could be a week, could be three weeks. He's a tough guy, we know that, played last year with a lot worse."

Arians wouldn't rule Ellington out for Sunday's game at Chicago.

If Ellington can't go, Chris Johnson would move into the starting role with rookie David Johnson as his backup (see full story).

Texans: O'Brien keeps QB controversy going
HOUSTON -- Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien said he knows who will start at quarterback against Carolina this weekend, but wouldn't say whether it will be Brian Hoyer or Ryan Mallett.

O'Brien said Monday, "You'll have to wait until the first offensive play of the Carolina game to see who the quarterback will be."

Hoyer was terrible in his Houston debut and benched for Ryan Mallett in the fourth quarter in a 27-20 loss to Kansas City.

Hoyer signed in the offseason and beat Mallett out in camp for the job. But on Sunday against the Chiefs, two turnovers by Hoyer put Houston in a big early hole.

Mallett threw a touchdown pass and 2-point conversion on his first drive and led the Texans on a possession that ended with a field goal after that.

Ravens: Looking to fill void left by Suggs
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Baltimore coach John Harbaugh and his staff are trying to fill the void left by six-time Pro Bowl linebacker Terrell Suggs, who tore his Achilles heel during the fourth quarter of the Ravens' 19-13 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

There are players already on the roster Harbaugh believes can step in, and there are free agents available who may fit as well.

The Ravens, who are calling San Jose State home this week while preparing to play the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, hope to find answers not only to their linebacker opening, but also to improving the production of their running game and handling defensive pressure.

Suggs is expected to return home in a day or two to consult with doctors and then undergo season-ending surgery soon thereafter.
