NFL Notes: Maurkice Pouncey hurts ankle vs. Packers

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey left Sunday's preseason game against Green Bay in the first quarter with a left ankle injury.

The four-time Pro Bowler was blocking in front of running back Le'Veon Bell when Packers cornerback Ha Ha Clinton-Dix rolled onto Pouncey's leg while making a tackle. Pouncey lay on the Heinz Field turf for several minutes before walking off under his own power. He was examined on the sideline before being taken to the locker room for X-rays.

Pouncey missed almost the entire 2013 season after tearing multiple ligaments in his right knee during the opener against Tennessee (see full story).

Browns: Manziel (elbow) cuts practice short
BEREA, Ohio -- Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel cut his practice short Sunday after experiencing soreness in his right elbow and could be sidelined for a few days.

Manziel has been bothered by a sore elbow for the past two weeks. After completing a pass Sunday, Manziel pointed toward his elbow. Browns coach Mike Pettine said Manziel may not practice Monday. The team has a scheduled day off on Tuesday.

The second-year QB sat out practice on Aug. 11 with a sore elbow, but played two nights later in an exhibition.

Pettine doesn't believe Manziel's elbow issue will be "a long-term thing." He will continue to get feedback from trainer Joe Sheehan.

Broncos: Manning can't find rhythm
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The new hybrid offense that mixes Peyton Manning's skills and Gary Kubiak's philosophies needs more work, or at least Manning's top targets do.

Dropped passes and penalties prevented the Broncos quarterback from finding the end zone or even a rhythm in his 2015 debut Saturday night.

Demaryius Thomas, Owen Daniels and James Casey dropped third-down passes that killed drives, and Virgil Green's holding penalty stalled Denver's most promising possession before backups engineered a 14-10 victory over the Houston Texans.

So, Manning didn't get the work, especially in the red zone, that he so desperately wanted after sitting out Denver's preseason opener against Seattle (see full story).
