No one really knows what Chip Kelly is doing. He plays everything close to the vest. He sees no value in letting the other 31 teams — or you — know what he's planning.
But Kelly, Seahwaks head coach Pete Carroll says, has a plan (or does he?). Trading LeSean McCoy and Nick Foles were part of it. Acquiring Kiko Alonso, Sam Bradford, DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews were, too.
"I think the people in Philadelphia should be very excited about the changes that are coming," Carroll said this week at the owners meetings. "Maybe they can't see it — the vision is not clear to them. Chip knows what he's doing. It's going to be interesting to see."
As someone in the same situation as Kelly, Carroll, the head honcho of player personnel in addition to coach in Seattle, pointed to Kelly's record for a strong vote of confidence.
"His record and his history has proven that he knows what he's doing and that he has his act together," he said. "I know he's really excited to have the opportunity to be in the position to mold the team. I wouldn't doubt for a second that he's not on it. He knows what he wants and what he needs. He's proven that."
Part of Kelly's plan was to sign cornerback Byron Maxwell to a six-year, $63 million contract away from Carroll's Seahawks.

"You're getting a really well-schooled football player," Carroll said (see video). "I think he's well equipped. Physically, he's got style. Mentally, he's got a very, very good makeup — stuff just doesn't bother Byron. He's got a competitive gameday mentality that I really, really admire."
