Both starting running back Adrian Peterson and his backup Toby Gerhart have officially been ruled out for the Vikings this afternoon against the Eagles.

Vikings analyst Sean Jensen first reported the news on Twitter (via ProFootballTalk) on Saturday night:

Without Peterson and Gerhart, the Vikings will be forced to start third-stringer Matt Asiata, a second-year pro with just three career carries — none of which came this season. Joe Banyard, who doesn't have a single NFL carry, will serve as Asiata's backup.

Peterson enters Sunday second in the league only to LeSean McCoy with 1,221 rushing yards. The reigning MVP left last week's game against the Ravens with a sprained right foot. He wore a walking boot early in the week and did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday but participated in a limited capacity on Friday.
