Predicting Eagles 53-man roster after 10 days of training camp

Share

The Eagles have made it through 10 practices since the pads came on at training camp.

No, it’s not really long enough to evaluate their entire 80-man roster but that’s the challenge facing the coaching staff, especially without preseason games.

Here’s my latest guess:

QB (3): Carson Wentz, Nate Sudfeld, Jalen Hurts

These three haven’t changed. Obviously, all three are going to make the roster. The real question is whether or not Sudfeld remains the backup.

RB (4): Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, Corey Clement, Adrian Killins

I feel really confident in the top three. Clement has looked healthy and strong this training camp, earning a spot. That fourth job comes down to Elijah Holyfield or Killins. The Eagles seem to really like Killins and he has next-level speed. That’s enough for me.

WR (6) DeSean Jackson, Jalen Reagor, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, Greg Ward Jr., John Hightower, Quez Watkins

It was really hard to cut Deontay Burnett. He deserves a roster spot but I just can’t see the Eagles keeping seven receivers. So unfortunately, he’s out here. The Eagles keep these six and Alshon Jeffery begins the season on PUP.

TE (3): Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, Noah Togiai

Josh Perkins was cruising toward a roster spot but he got hurt and is now on IR. So Noah Togiai is the next guy up. The rookie from Oregon State has looked pretty good in camp. There’s a chance the Eagles will roll with two tight ends, but that might not be wise.

OL (9): Jason Peters, Isaac Seumalo, Jason Kelce, Matt Pryor, Lane Johnson, Jordan Mailata, Jack Driscoll, Nate Herbig, Prince Tega Wanogho

The last cut here is Sua Opeta and he’s one of the final cuts overall. So there’s a chance he could make the team and the Eagles keep 10. Or they cut Tega, who isn’t a roster lock. The others are making the team. And there’s a chance the Eagles might try to find some veteran tackle help after losing Andre Dillard for the season.

DE (6): Brandon Graham, Derek Barnett, Vinny Curry, Josh Sweat, Joe Ostman, Casey Toohill

Ostman and Toohilll, simply put, have played their ways onto the roster. That’s how good they’ve been this summer. Both deserve to make the team. That would mean Genard Avery and Shareef Miller get cut. It would be hard to cut a 4th-round pick and a guy you got by trading a 4th-round pick but Ostman and Toohill are better right now.

DT (4): Fletcher Cox, Javon Hargrave, Malik Jackson, Hassan Ridgeway

Depending on Hargrave’s injury status, the Eagles might keep five here. If they do, Raequon Williams, the UDFA from Michigan State, is the next man up. But I’ll have them sticking with four for now, especially because Graham and Curry can play inside.

LB (6): Nate Gerry, Duke Riley, T.J. Edwards, Davion Taylor, Shaun Bradley, Alex Singleton

I was torn on whether to keep six linebackers or six corners. I went with linebackers because of the inexperience at the position. At least Singleton has been around for a while. And until the rookies are ready, he’s my fourth linebacker.

CB (5): Darius Slay, Avonte Maddox, Nickell Robey-Coleman, Cre’Von LeBlanc, Rasul Douglas

The obvious omission here is Sidney Jones. I don’t know if the Eagles would be willing to outright cut him but he certainly hasn’t won a roster spot. If I’m the Eagles, I’m trying to ship him out for a conditional late-round pick to a team that thinks they can get something out of the former 2nd-round pick. Keep an eye on Craig James too, by the way. He’s a good special teamer and has a better chance than you might think to make the roster.

S (4): Rodney McLeod, Jalen Mills, K’von Wallace, Will Parks

I feel like these four are virtual locks. The other names to watch here are UDFA Grayland Arnold and special teamer Rudy Ford. If Arnold doesn’t make the team, the Eagles will try to get him on the practice squad.

Specialists (3): Jake Elliott, Cameron Johnston, Rick Lovato

These three are solid.

PUP: Brandon Brooks, Alshon Jeffery, Daeshon Hall

IR: Josh Perkins, Andre Dillard

Practice squad (16+international exemption): Craig James, Elijah Holyfield, Deontay Burnett, Sua Opeta, Luke Juriga, Grayland Arnold, Marcus Epps, Raequon Williams, Shareef Miller, Michael Jacquet, Julian Good-Jones, Tyrone Swoopes, Elijah Riley, Mike Warren, Anthony Rush, Rudy Ford, Matt Leo
