PST: Reese understands Boykin's tough situation

Brandon Boykin is frustrated with his role with the Eagles, but he's accepting it (see story). The Eagles' secondary hasn't been good this year, and much has been debated why Boykin hasn't seen more snaps.

The coaching staff has stuck by its philosophy of having bigger, more physical starting corners. Yet, whenever Boykin is on the field he's often the Eagles' best playmaker.

On Friday's Philly Sports Talk, Ike Reese explained why he understands the situation Boykin is in, because he was in that same position when he was an Eagle.

"As a coach who believes strongly in their philosophy, what they are looking for in a defense and it is hard to get them out of that belief," Reese said. "It just is. When you see a player, you can sort of label a player. I went through this as a player being here where I was stuck in that nickel linebacker sort of a role, special teams guy. They just didn't think I could be there as a starter. Brandon Boykin is going through sort of the same thing because he doesn't fit the criteria in which they want from their defensive backs."

Reese added it's not because Boykin isn't good enough to be on the field.

"It is certainly not the talent level," Reese said. "It is certainly not the productivity he can bring to the table if he is out there. It is certainly not a fear that he can't handle himself out there on an island by himself. It is more of this is the philosophy that we believe in for this defense."
