Quick Slants: Jeremy Maclin vs. Patrick Peterson

Share

Jeremy Maclin has proven to be a reliable receiving option in the Eagles' offense.

He leads the Birds' receiving corps with 60 targets -- 22 more than fellow wideouts Jordan Matthews and Riley Cooper.

He's caught only 27 passes from Nick Foles, but a lot of that has come as a result of Foles' inconsistent play.

Patrick Peterson, who is becoming one of the premier shutdown cornerbacks in the NFL, will likely line up across from Maclin on Sunday in Arizona.

"I don't think Maclin will have a lot of success against him going deep," Derrick Gunn said on Wednesday's edition of Quick Slants. "But I do believe that if they get him on some delayed routes over the middle, or some deep post routes, I do believe he'll have a good measure of success against him."

Peterson has recently shown some vulnerability when defending slant routes. Two of the last three touchdowns given up by the Cardinals' defense have been through the air against Peterson -- both in Arizona's 30-20 win over the Redskins in Week 6.

One-on-one in the slot, DeSean Jackson burst past Peterson across the middle of the field, caught a quick pass from Kirk Cousins and turned it into a 64-yard touchdown. Peterson would get beat again by a Pierre Garcon slant route for a five-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter (see both scores in this video).

Maclin's ability to run routes and make tough catches will be put to the test in Arizona.

"These are the kind of games that define where a wide receiver is," Reuben Frank said. "If you can produce against a guy like Peterson, you're one of the best."
