Report: Eagles worked out UCLA QB Brett Hundley

The Eagles have looked closely at former UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley, one of the highest-rated quarterbacks in the upcoming draft, according to an NFL Network report.

On his Twitter timeline Thursday, network insider Ian Rapoport wrote that the Eagles recently conducted a private workout for Hundley away from the NovaCare Complex. The Bengals and Jets also worked him out, according to Rapoport.

The Eagles pick 20th overall on April 30, the first round of the NFL draft. Hundley, whom NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock has rated as the draft’s fifth-best quarterback prospect, has been polarizing for the scouting community.

Many analysts project Hundley as a Day 2 pick, in the second or third round, who could sneak into the first round if a team falls in love with his athleticism and upside. The 6-foot-3, 226-pound Hundley is a dual-threat quarterback who led the Bruins with 10 rushing touchdowns this past season. At the NFL Scouting Combine in February, Hundley placed top five among quarterbacks in all five drills.

The Eagles traded Nick Foles and a second-round pick to St. Louis for Sam Bradford this offseason but Bradford has just one year left on his deal and the Eagles can recoup draft compensation from the Rams based on Bradford’s snap totals.

Chip Kelly has said he or someone from his staff will interview all of the top quarterback prospects during the pre-draft process, but private workouts generally indicate more interest than an interview at the combine or Senior Bowl does.

Hundley started 13 games and became the first UCLA quarterback to win at least nine games in three consecutive seasons. He finished as the school’s all-time leader in touchdowns (75) and total yards (11,677). In a game against Utah, Hundley became the first player in school history to throw, catch and run for a touchdown.

At the combine, Hundley said Kelly’s offense is the closest resemblance to UCLA’s and recalled when Kelly, then coaching at Oregon, recruited him out of high school in Arizona.

“He’s great,” Hundley said. “Great individual, great man, love him to death. I got to spend some time coming out of high school, one of my former teammates, Dion Jordan, went to Oregon, so I knew a good amount about that school coming out.”

Hundley also been mentored by Donovan McNabb, who lives in the same Arizona suburb where Hundley grew up.
