Resilient Eagles have avoided losing streaks

They were silenced by the 49ers, then came home the next Sunday and dropped 34 points on the Rams.

They were scorched in the final minutes by the Cardinals, then went back out west and outlasted the Texans in Houston.

They were humiliated at Lambeau Field by Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, then scored a 21-point win over the Titans seven days later at the Linc.

When the Eagles lose, it’s sometimes ugly, it’s sometimes nail-biting and it’s usually downright humbling like Sunday’s 24-14 loss at the Linc to the defending champion Seahawks.

But no matter how lopsided the loss, or no matter how heartbreaking, the Eagles haven’t let the sour taste from any of their defeats fester. They haven’t lost consecutive games this season and haven’t dropped two straight since the first half of last season, the first season with Chip Kelly at the helm.

“Because nobody points the fingers,” Brandon Graham said. “Nobody worries about the last game. It’s a long season. We’ve just got to shake stuff off and keep moving.”

Moments after they compiled just 139 total offensive yards and let Russell Wilson account for three touchdowns on Sunday, the Eagles were already turning the page on their most recent defeat.

While fans and media were — and still are — framing the perspective of another loss to a playoff-caliber team, the Eagles were fast-forwarding to Sunday’s home showdown against the Cowboys, a game with major NFC East title ramifications.

That’s because, Connor Barwin said, they react equally to losses and wins. They take 24 hours to either sulk or celebrate and then it’s on to the next one.

It’s a one-game season for 16 weeks.

“You can give credit to our leadership and the way they carry themselves,” Barwin added. “You don’t get too high, you don’t get too low. Stay steady. You don’t overreact when you win, you don’t overreact when you lose. You just keep going, try to continue to improve every week.”

While everyone around them is making blanket statements after every game, the Eagles aren’t looking at the big picture.

They’re just thinking about the next practice.

“I think this group is really focused, and when we have lost, we have lost to some really good teams,” Kelly said. “I don't think it's from a lack of effort or a lack of attention to detail.

“This team trains very well during the week and they are professional in their approach in everything they do. They also understand that in this league, anything can happen. You know, it's the deal.

“You hear question about, ‘Do you beat teams with winning records?’ Well, Oakland has two wins and they’re both against teams with winning records. Who would have predicted that? I don't know. You can go through a million exercises that really don't affect the outcome of a game, trying to figure out all these different scenarios.

“The one thing I think this group does is they work really hard when they are in this building every single day and I expect the same thing when they come back here [Tuesday].”

The Eagles have been remarkably resilient in their two years under Kelly, especially after suffering through a three-game losing skid and a two-game losing streak in his first eight games, a 3-5 start.

They’ve since played 21 games without losing two straight, with four wins after their past four losses going back to last year, three by double digits.

“We’ve got a lot of resilience,” safety Malcolm Jenkins said. “It’s not necessarily about comparing ourselves to other teams. It’s just being the best team that week and [against Seattle] we weren’t the best team, but that’s just [Sunday], and we still think we can line up against anybody and play. By the time [Tuesday] comes, we’ll be looking forward to our next opportunity.”

Even after one-sided losses that provoke questions about their playoff legitimacy, the Eagles counter in convincing fashion.

After losing by 32 to Denver last season, they went to the Meadowlands and secured a 15-point win over the Giants. After losing by 18 to a bad Vikings team last year at the Metrodome, they came home and butchered the Bears by 43 points in a 54-11 rout.

Despite giving up 53 points to the Packers last month and scoring just 20, the Eagles came back home and overwhelmed the Titans in a 43-24 win.

Kelly likes to say praise and blame are all the same, his way of keeping the Eagles from reading too much into wins and losses.

Sunday’s loss to the Seahawks could threaten to shake their confidence. The Eagles were embarrassed before their home crowd and looked like they didn’t belong on the same field as the Seahawks.

But it’s just one game to them.

“It doesn't define you,” Kelly said. “You know how well you played and you know how you performed on a given day. You're going to have days where you're really successful and we've had days like that. We're going to have days where it doesn't work out the way you want it to work out.

“But if you're going to pack your bags after that and take your ball and go home, I don't think we have a group like that. I think this team has good resolve, and I expect them to be flying high when they get in here [Tuesday] and get ready to go.

“There's no better thing to get their attention than playing the Dallas Cowboys at home in the Linc in front of our crowd, so I think they will be fired up for it.”
