3 and Out: Nick or Vick?

Mike Vick does not sound like somebody who’s about to play football any time soon.
“It was a bad pull, so just trying to work every day to get myself back into position where I can come out here and run full-speed,” Vick said Tuesday.
“I feel it getting better, it’s just when I try to burst it’s still that knot is there. But I think another week of rehab will put me in a position where I can start gaining confidence in it and doing the things I need to do.”
Vick said progress has been slow as he tries to recover from a serious hamstring injury suffered just before halftime of the Giants game on Oct. 6.
Everything points to Nick Foles making a second straight start at quarterback Sunday when the Eagles face the Cowboys at the Linc.
Because running is such a big part of his game, Vick needs to fully recover to have a chance to get back on the field.
“It can be re-aggravated quickly,” Vick said. “I think because mine is up so high and the way I run, I’ve got to take precaution. I can’t over-do it, and if I do, it’ll end up being another two or three weeks. I’ve got to be real meticulous about it.”
Head coach Chip Kelly did not meet with the media on Tuesday, but he said after Foles threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth Sunday in Tampa that he won’t even think about who the starting quarterback will be until Vick is healthy.
He didn’t rule out Foles keeping the job even if Vick is medically cleared.
Vick said he can’t afford to think about any of that right now.
“I’ll let Coach Kelly make that determination,” he said. “I’m not going to focus on what could be or what should be. Right now I’ve got to rehab. I’ve got to get myself back to 100 percent to where I can go out there and help this team if I’m out there on the field.
“I’m not going to try to make that determination right now. I can’t even think that far.”
Vick was limited at practice on Tuesday. Most of practice was closed to the media, but Vick said he did the same stuff he did last week, meaning he took some drops but did not participate in any team drills.
“I didn’t want to press it,” he said. “Tomorrow I’ve got to do a little bit more.”
When will he be ready?
“I can’t answer that question,” he said. “Just taking it one day at a time and continue to rehab and when I think I’m ready, I’ll tell Coach Kelly I’m ready and he can make that determination.”
Vick has missed 12 games with injury since becoming the Eagles’ full-time starting quarterback early in 2010 and has played only 16 games once in his career, back in 2006 with the Falcons.
Vick revealed Tuesday that he changed his pregame stretching routine before the Giants game, and he suspects that contributed to what he said was only the second hamstring pull he’s ever had.
“I think I do a good job of stretching," he said. "It’s just that game against New York I came with a different regimen and it backfired on me.
“I just stretched differently, and then I tried to over-stride when I was running. I tried to extend too much when I normally lean when I run. Just trying to do too much. That’s how much I want to win this game.
“I understand what I did wrong and hopefully it won’t happen again.”
Vick was the emergency quarterback Sunday in Tampa, and he said if he had to play right now, he would not be able to function close to what we’re used to.
“If I had to go in the game, I could just sit in the pocket and throw the football,” he said. “That’s like playing 7-on-7, but 7-on-7 is kind of like unrealistic because you’ve got people coming at you.
“Being an emergency guy, that’s what I’m going to be. If that’s the case.”
