Source: Eagles hire veteran West Coast scout Marty Barrett

The Eagles have hired former Chicago Bears scout Marty Barrett to patrol the West Coast, according to a team source.

The Chicago Tribune first reported that Barrett, who spent the past 18 seasons with the Bears, will join the Eagles’ staff. Barrett’s contract with the Bears expired after the draft and wasn’t renewed by new general manager Ryan Pace.

The source said Barrett will serve as a senior scout whose area will be the West Coast. The Eagles already have Trey Brown, a 2013 hire, assigned to the West Coast and used their first pick in the draft on Southern California wide receiver Nelson Agholor.

There could be some staff reshuffling done by vice president of football operations Ed Marynowitz, who heads the scouting staff. The Eagles, as of now, are without a college scouting director and southwest scout after firing former director of college scouting Anthony Patch and southwest area scout Brad Obee after the draft.

Patch resides in Washington State so the firing of him and Obee left the Eagles without the same scouting presence out west, a hotbed for college talent. Agholor and second-round pick Eric Rowe (Utah) both played out west.

Barrett had scouted the West Coast with the Bears before former general manager Phil Emery promoted him three years ago to college scouting director. Barrett largely earned credit helping the Bears discover center Olin Kreutz (University of Washington) and Lance Briggs (Arizona), two third-rounders who eventually became annual Pro Bowlers.

Barrett is the fifth person to be added to or promoted within the scouting department since coach Chip Kelly, who has total control over football operations, promoted Marynowitz to lead the scouting department and second from the Bears.

On May 13, Marynowitz hired former Bears associate director of pro personnel Dwayne Joseph to be the Eagles’ director of pro personnel. Marynowitz also hired Joe Pannunzio from the University of Alabama as the team’s director of personnel operations, promoted Louis Clark to senior director of pro personnel and hired Chris Shea away from the Dolphins as director of scouting administration/strategic management.
