A league source has confirmed the CBSSports.com report that the Eagles have added 40-year-old Bill Lazor to rookie head coach Chip Kelly’s staff in an unknown capacity.

Lazor, a Scranton native and former Cornell quarterback, had been offensive coordinator the last three years at the University of Virginia after seven seasons as an NFL assistant in Atlanta, Washington and Seattle.

A team spokesman has said the club will not confirm or deny any coaching hires until Kelly’s staff is complete, even though assistants with Eagles credentials and wearing Eagles gear were seen working with Kelly at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

Lazor’s title with the Eagles is unknown. Offensive coaches already believed to be in place are Pat Shurmur, the likely offensive coordinator; running backs coach Duce Staley; tight ends coach Ted Williams; and likely wide receivers coach Bob Bicknell. Mike Dawson has experience coaching on both sides of the ball. None have been acknowledged by the Eagles. Staley and Williams were on Andy Reid’s final staff. Shurmur was on Reid’s original staff.

Lazor, 40, coached at his alma mater, Cornell, from 1994 through 2000 and then was offensive coordinator and QBs coach at Buffalo for two years before Dan Reeves brought him to Atlanta in 2003.

When Reeves was fired, he joined Joe Gibbs’ Redskins staff in 2004, first as an offensive assistant and then in 2006 and 2007 as quarterbacks coach. He joined Mike Holmgren in Seattle in 2008 and stayed the following year under Jim Mora Jr. When Pete Carroll came in, he kept only Gus Bradley from Mora’s staff, and Lazor went to Virginia.

According to Virginia’s web site, the Cavaliers improved from last in the ACC at 270 yards per game in 2009 to fourth in the conference with 405 yards per game in 2010, Lazor’s first year as offensive coordinator. They were fourth again in 2011 but only ninth this past season.
