LeSean McCoy was his first 40-yard dash victim. Now Michael Vick is accepting challenges from all NFL quarterbacks.
In an interview on The Dan Patrick Show Friday, the 32-year-old Vick addressed his speed, saying he thinks he’s still the fastest QB in the NFL.
“These guys are young and they’re fast, they’re quick,” Vick said of the new crop of running QBs. “The thing I do have is a very quick get-off, my burst ... I mean I really don’t feel like there’s a quarterback in the league that can beat me in a 40-yard dash. If somebody wants to set something up, I’d be more than glad to accept the challenge. But as of right now, I’d say me. But Colin Kaepernick is fast, RG3 is fast.”
Vick ran a 4.33 40 at the 2001 Combine. He averaged 7.3 yards per carry in Atlanta, and 7.0 for the Eagles in his first two full seasons. He led the league in YPC five times in 10 seasons.
But last year Vick rushed for just 332 yards, a career-low for a season in which he started more than four games. His 5.4-yard average was the worst he’s ever had.
A new workout regimen, though, has Vick running as fast as ever, he says.
“What Chip [Kelly] has implemented in the weight room, and what he’s asked me to do and the lift that I have has really allowed me to gain six pounds of muscle,” Vick revealed. “I see muscles in my legs I used to see when I was younger. My burst is there. I’m just excited, I feel like it’s a lot that’s in my favor.
“After racing LeSean [McCoy], and how I feel, I still think I run about a 4.4. Maybe a high 4.4, but my quickness is there.”
