With the Stanley Cup Finals still underway, the Flyers have made a move to possibly get ahead of the free agent market and try to land a goaltender. Earlier this evening, the team announced it had acquired the rights to pending free agent Ilya Bryzgalov, previously a member of the Phoenix Coyotes. In exchange for Bryzgalov's rights, the Flyers sent forward Matt Clackson, a 2012 third round pick, and a conditional draft pick to Phoenix. The conditional pick will be based on whether the Flyers are successful in signing Bryzgalov, and Paul Holmgren says it won't be a first or second rounder.
We'll have more on what all this means in a bit. The important point at the moment is that they have only acquired the rights to Bryzgalov, and not (yet) his actual services. They can now attempt to sign him to a new contract before free agency begins on July 1. (Photo: Jerome Miron-US Presswire)
