Antero Niittymaki’s NHL career as a goaltender with the Flyers lasted four seasons.
There’s a better chance his next career with the Flyers could last a bit longer.
The Flyers announced on Wednesday that they have hired Niittymaki to scout goalies in Europe. Neil Little is responsible for all goalies worldwide.
Niittymaki spent six years in the NHL.
A sixth-round pick in the 1998 draft with the Flyers, he started with three seasons with the Phantoms, backing them to the 2005 Calder Cup championship.
He joined the Flyers in 2005-06, was both a starter and backup intermittently here, and played through the 2008-09 season before signing as a free agent with Tampa Bay in the summer of 2009.
After a year in Tampa, he signed with San Jose the following summer.
He was forced into retirement this past April after recurring hip problems – which plagued him as a Flyer - while playing briefly in Finland.
