Flyers Injury Update: Ryan White (upper body) out 2-4 weeks

The Flyers are having trouble staying healthy.

Ryan White, the latest casualty to the injury bug, will be sidelined for the next two to four weeks with an upper-body ailment, GM Ron Hextall announced Sunday.

White appeared to hurt his right shoulder in the third period of Saturday's 3-2 overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes. He was crunched in the corner by 'Canes defenseman John-Michael Liles and remained on the ice until a whistle blew to stop play.

The 27-year-old, who was visibly in distress, eventually skated off the ice under his own power, favoring his right shoulder, and did not return to the game. He had three hits in over 12 minutes of total ice time.

White has appeared in all 17 games this season for the Flyers, recording one goal and two assists while playing a key role on the team's fourth line. He had also been used to kill penalties as of late.

The Flyers recently called up winger Taylor Leier, who made his NHL debut on Saturday, to replace R.J. Umberger on the active roster. Umberger is on injured reserve with a foot injury and has missed the last three games.

Additionally, Shayne Gostisbehere was also brought up to fill in for Mark Streit, who was placed on LTIR on Saturday. Streit is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday to repair a pubic plate detachment and will be sidelined for six weeks.

It's possible the team could recall another forward in the next few days. Veterans Chris Conner and Tim Brent and prospects Nick Cousins and Petr Straka will likely be considered.

The Flyers do have two healthy extra forwards currently with the team, however. Brayden Schenn and Vinny Lecavalier were scratched against the Hurricanes.

Head coach Dave Hakstol hinted Schenn would return to the lineup when the Flyers take on the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night.

“Brayden has gotten off to a good start and things haven’t gone great over the last couple games,” Hakstol said before Saturday's game (see story). “He’s just out for the night.”

With White out, it's likely Leier will remain with the Flyers for the time being. The rookie skated on a line with Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Sam Gagner against the Hurricanes and recorded one shot on goal in over seven minutes of ice time.
