Just last week, Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said the organization wasn’t that close to naming a new head coach for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Terry Murray left last month to take an assistant’s role with the Buffalo Sabres.

On Monday, Hextall announced that Scott Gordon would take over for Murray.

“We are extremely pleased to add Scott to our organization as head coach of our top affiliate in Lehigh Valley,” Hextall said in a statement.

“He brings in a proven track record of success and knowledge as a coach at all levels, and we are confident he can help develop our prospects through our system, as well as lead the Phantoms back to the Calder Cup playoffs.”

Riley Cote, an assistant under Murray, will remain on the staff, as well.

Gordon, 52, was an assistant coach in Toronto under both Ron Wilson and Randy Carlyle, but he is best known to Flyers fans as the head coach of the Islanders from 2008 to 2010.

Gordon becomes the ninth coach in Phantoms history. He has eight years coaching experience in the AHL, including five seasons as head coach of the Providence Bruins.

Born in Brockton, Mass., Gordon was head coach of the U.S. National Team in 2010 and 2011 and was an assistant for Team USA at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

A former Olympic goaltender in 1992, Gordon played four years at Boston College (1982-86).
