Flyers Notes: Michael Del Zotto avoids major injury vs. Jets

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Flyers defenseman Michael Del Zotto avoided a major right leg injury in Saturday night's 3-0 win over the Jets at MTS Centre.

During a Flyers second-period power play, Del Zotto lost the puck behind the net as Jets right winger Chris Thorburn came along to claim it.

Del Zotto's right leg was fully extended and as Thorburn turned to get the puck, his left leg caught Del Zotto's right.

The replay showed it was not an intentional slew foot by Thorburn.

The Flyers' defenseman stayed down and then had to be lifted and helped off the ice, all the while holding his right leg high. He returned minutes later and finished the game playing 18:48.

"I couldn't feel my leg," Del Zotto said. "That's why I didn't get up. I couldn't feel my right leg, so I was a bit concerned. I went off and after a couple minutes got it back.

“I just might have hit the nerve there. He just got the back of my leg. I couldn’t feel the back of my leg so I was a bit worried.”

Del Zotto had a strong game, logging 3:37 on the penalty kill. The Flyers were a perfect 5 for 5 on the PK, shutting down Winnipeg's power play.

Did the Flyers actually showing some offense result in better defense?

"I think a little bit of both," Del Zotto said. "I think we've really focused on clean entries, getting out of our zone clean and not allowing them to have sustained zone pressure because that's obviously when bad things happen and the puck is in the back of your net.

"When you do have the puck and you have sustained offensive zone pressure, you're defending less and as a result, less shots against your net."

Power play
Brayden Schenn's first-period power-play goal snapped an 0-for-16 skid over the Flyers' last seven games.

The Flyers avoided tying a dubious record: They went eight games in 1970 without scoring on the power play.

"We were getting good movement," winger Wayne Simmonds, who had a power-play goal as well, said. "We were trying not to get down on ourselves. It came together tonight.

"I thought we had even better movement than we did in the past and we were getting shots through, shots from all angles and it paid off."

Schenn leads the Flyers with five goals.

Medvedev update
Defenseman Evgeny Medvedev has shown improvement from his upper-body injury but remains day to day, general manager Ron Hextall said. He has missed four games now.

Hextall wasn't certain Medvedev would be able to play Tuesday against Colorado because he may need more than one day of practice.

The Flyers are off Sunday and will practice on Monday at Skate Zone in Voorhees, New Jersey.

“Hopefully, he skates in the next day or two and we get to see where he is at,” Hextall said.
