Briere to see hand specialist, questionable for opener

VOORHEES, N.J. -- Danny Briere will see a hand specialist this week for further evaluation of a left wrist injury he suffered in late December while playing in Germany.

General manager Paul Holmgren admitted he has some concern about whether Briere will be ready to play. The season opener is expected to be Jan. 19 at the Wells Fargo Center.

Briere has a sprain and bone bruise.

Danny Briere is a little bit of a concern, Holmgren said. We'll get the information on that over the next few days.

On Monday, Briere said, "It's not bad. It's getting better every day." But its entirely possible Briere misses the start of the season.

I don't know for sure, Holmgren said. We'll see in the next few days once our doctors get their hands on him. I don't think it's serious, but we'll see. The fact that Danny was playing probably was good. Missing a little bit of time isn't that big of a deal.

With the questions surrounding defenseman Andrej Meszaros availability at seasons start given his lengthy rehab off Achilles tendon surgery, this is less than an ideal way to begin training camp.

Obviously, you'd like to have him, Holmgren said of Briere. If we don't, we'll deal with it.
