Briere (wrist) may return earlier than expected

VOORHEES, N.J.There was good news to report on Danny Brieres wrist injury Monday, according to Flyers GM Paul Holmgren ... sort of.

Briere is healing from the injury he sustained to his left wrist while playing in Germany in December. But, Holmgren admitted, the veteran forward had incurred a hairline fracture.

Previously, the injury had been considered just a sprain or, at worst, a bone bruise.

The news on Danny today was somewhat positive, Holmgren said. The injury showed its a little further along in a good way than what we had initially anticipated. Well see how he is tomorrow and the next day. It probably changes at least my thoughts about him being out an extended period of time. It might not be as long as we initially thought.

That said, Briere is likely out for at least the Flyers first two games. His chances of being ready to go for Saturdays season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins are iffy, said Holmgren, who also said the Flyers had been aware that the injury was a fracture for some time.

The original timetable for his return had him ready to play Jan. 19. That no longer seems to be the case.

Briere returned from Berlin some time ago but hasnt been skating. He hasnt taken part in either of the first two days of training camp but has remained optimistic about the healing process.

In fact, hes healing really well and going in the right direction, he told CSNPhilly.com in a text message.

As of now, its uncertain whether the 35-year-old Briere will be healthy enough to partake in the Flyers training camp, which runs through Friday.

Well take it a day at a time and see where he is tomorrow, Holmgren said.
