Future Flyers Report: Nicolas Aube-Kubel heating up

Share

We continue our weekly check-in on the Flyers’ prospects currently playing in the AHL, overseas or at the junior and college levels.

There’s a lot to report, so let’s get right to it!

Nicolas Aube-Kubel, C/RW, Val-d'Or Foreurs
Aube-Kubel had the hot hand for Val-d'Or last week. The 19-year-old scored twice in a 7-3 win over Rimouski on Tuesday and added two more markers and an assist in a 5-4 Foreurs victory on Saturday. He's up to 13 goals and 21 points in 18 games this season.

Anthony Stolarz, G, Lehigh Valley Phantoms
Flyers GM Ron Hextall has to be pleased with what he's seen from Stolarz. The towering netminder started all three of Lehigh Valley's games last week and was superb in net. He made 30 saves in a 6-3 win over Binghamton on Wednesday, turned aside 33 shots in Friday's 7-1 drubbing of Rochester and capped the week off with 27 saves in a 2-1 overtime loss to Albany on Saturday. Stolarz has done more than enough to unseat Jason LaBarbera as the Phantoms' starter. The 21-year-old is 5-3-1 with a .930 save percentage and 1.90 goals-against average in nine starts overall this season.

Ivan Provorov, D, Brandon Wheat Kings
Provorov had an impressive showing in Brandon’s 4-1 win over Lethbridge on Saturday. The 18-year-old defenseman recorded his fourth goal of the season and finished the game a plus-3. He hasn’t been racking up a ton of points as of late but the important thing is that his two-way game has been steady. The No. 7 overall pick is looking mighty relaxed right now.

Radel Fazleev, LW, Calgary Hitmen
Another really strong week for Fazleev. The Russian forward is oozing confidence and it’s showed. He recorded two assists in Friday’s 6-0 win over Kootenay and scored one of Calgary’s four goals against Tri-City on Saturday. Fazleev is also leading the Hitmen in scoring with 26 points (12 goals) in 22 games.

Fellow Flyers prospect Travis Sanheim, who is recovering from an upper-body injury, missed both games for Calgary over the weekend.

Nick Cousins, C, Lehigh Valley Phantoms
Nice to see Cousins pick up right where he left off. After missing a few games with a suspected head injury, the 22-year-old collected a goal and an assist in his return against Binghamton. He also put up four points in Friday's rout of Rochester. Cousins has five goals, 10 assists and a plus-8 rating in 11 games overall in 2015-16. Potential call-up? You bet.

Cooper Marody, C/RW, University of Michigan Wolverines
Marody's freshmen campaign could not have gotten off to a better start. He's recorded four goals and 10 points with 19 shots in seven games so far and is coming off a three-point performance in Michigan's 7-3 win over Niagara.

Travis Konecny, C/RW, Ottawa 67's
All Konecny does is pile up points. The 2015 first-round pick added two more assists for the 67’s last week. He now has five goals and 28 points in 19 games in 2015-16 and is reportedly on the trade block in the OHL. That’s something worth keeping an eye on.

Sam Morin/Robert Hagg/Mark Alt, D, Lehigh Valley Phantoms
With Shayne Gostisbehere now up with the big club, there are plenty of minutes up for grabs in Allentown. Veterans Andrew MacDonald and Davis Drewiske are the anchors for the Phantoms but it should be interesting to see how Morin, Hagg and Alt are used moving forward. For most of the season, Morin and Alt have been paired together and the duo is starting to show some nice chemistry. Alt picked up two assists last week and Morin mixed things up, dropping the gloves for the first time in his professional career. Hagg, who recently returned from an injury, spent the past two games with Drewiske and they were often matched up against the opposition's top offensive players.

Oskar Lindblom, LW/RW, Sweden Brynäs IF
The 2014 fifth-round pick is holding his own overseas. Lindblom recorded a goal and an assist in a 5-1 win over Rögle BK on Tuesday and had another helper in Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Malmö. In 18 games this season, the young Swede has four goals, 11 assists and a plus-12 rating.

Goalie Felix Sandstrom, a fellow Flyers prospect who is 5-2-1 with a .903 save percentage and 2.81 goals-against average in eight starts for Brynäs, missed both games this week while recovering from an illness.

Mark Friedman, D, Bowling Green Falcons
Friedman has brought a real calming influence to Bowling Green’s back end. The sophomore had three blocks in a 2-0 loss to Michigan Tech on Friday but helped the Falcons rebound in the rematch. On Saturday, he had another blocked shot, fired four attempts on goal and notched an assist in a 3-2 victory.

Merrick Madsen, G, Harvard Crimson
Madsen was spectacular in Saturday's 3-0 win over Princeton, turning aside all 38 of the shots fired his way. The sophomore netminder is 3-0-0 with a 0.67 goals-against average and .976 save percentage in his three starts this season.

Tyrell Goulbourne, C/LW, Lehigh Valley Phantoms
Don't look now but Goulbourne is showing he can use his hands for something other than knockouts. The gritty forward recorded at least a point in all three of the Phantoms' games last week and now has four goals and six points in 15 appearances this season. Most importantly, his only time spent in the penalty box has been while he served two fighting majors. Could he be the anti-Zac Rinaldo? So far, so good.

Reece Willcox, D, Cornell University
Willcox is a big reason why Cornell is 5-1-0 in its first six games this season. The senior defenseman collected an assist in both of his team's wins over Colgate over the weekend and has six points in the early going. He's primarily used as a shutdown defender but has managed to add an offensive element to his game.

Ivan Fedotov, G, Reaktor Nizhnekamsk
After a brief stint as a backup in the KHL, Fedotov was returned to his junior club last week. He made 17 saves for Reaktor Nizhnekamsk on Friday but his club fell in overtime, 3-2.

Petr Straka, LW/RW, Lehigh Valley Phantoms
The elusive winger scored a goal in all three of Lehigh Valley's outings last week to increase his team-lead in markers to nine. Straka is another player who could soon find himself in orange and black with the Flyers. He has 12 points and is a plus-6 in 15 games for the Phantoms.
