Future Flyers Report: Travis Konecny riding 13-game streak

Share

We continue our weekly check-in on the Flyers’ prospects currently playing in the AHL, overseas or at the junior and college levels.

In this edition, we’ll begin with a first-round pick who continues to score at a torrid rate in the OHL.

Here we go!

Travis Konecny, C/RW, Sarnia Sting
Shayne Gostisbehere isn't the only youngster riding an impressive hot stretch. At the OHL level, Konecny has nine goals and 14 assists during a 13-game point streak for Sarnia. The 19-year-old has racked up 38 points in just 22 games since being dealt to the Sting and has 23 goals and 60 assists in 51 games overall this season. There really isn't anything Konecny can't do. He plays key minutes in all aspects of the game and possesses dynamic skating ability that allows him to accelerate rapidly with each step.

Travis Sanheim, D, Calgary Hitmen
Sanheim is producing at an impressive rate. The 6-foot-4 defenseman has two goals and seven assists during a seven-game point streak and has 51 points in 40 games overall in 2015-16. Projected to be a top-pair caliber guy, Sanheim has proved to be one of the most dynamic and talented skaters in the WHL. Don't sleep on his defensive-zone awareness, either. He's improving with each passing game.

Ivan Provorov, D, Brandon Wheat Kings
Brandon erupted for an 11-1 win over Kootenay on Wednesday and followed that up with an 8-3 drubbing of Edmonton on Friday before Sunday's 3-2 loss to Prince Albert. In the pair of victories, however, Provorov potted a goal and assisted three more. The 2015 first-round pick, along with Sanheim, has been one of the top blueliners in the WHL in 2015-16, recording 13 goals, 41 assists and plus-45 rating in 49 games.

Taylor Leier, LW, Lehigh Valley Phantoms
Leier is playing some spirited hockey. The 22-year-old scored twice and added an assist in Saturday's 5-4 shootout loss to Bridgeport and followed that performance up with two more helpers in Sunday's 5-4 win over Springfield. Leier, who has 38 points in 49 games this season, has been red-hot for Lehigh Valley since mid-January. He has eight goals and 10 assists in his last 13 outings and has consistently been the team’s most dangerous forward.

Nicolas Aube-Kubel, C/RW, Val-d'Or Foreurs
Aube-Kubel continues to rack up points in the QMJHL. He registered two goals and two assists in three games for Val-d'Or last week. The 19-year-old is up to 35 markers and 75 points in 50 games this season. To put that in perspective, Aube-Kubel recorded career-highs of 38 goals and 42 assists in 61 appearances in 2014-15. He's well on his way to bypass his own milestones and will likely be a key fixture on the Phantoms to start next season.

Radel Fazleev, LW, Calgary Hitmen
Fazleev, another forward expected to start next season with Lehigh Valley, is enjoying a breakout campaign. The 20-year-old collected three assists in a 6-2 win over Lethbridge on Wednesday and had one goal and six helpers overall in four games for the Hitmen last week. Fazleev, who also helped Team Russia earn a silver medal at the World Junior Championship, leads Calgary in scoring with 17 goals and 42 assists in 49 games.

Anthony Stolarz, G, Lehigh Valley Phantoms
Stolarz was a busy man for the Phantoms last week. He started all three of the club's tilts and saw plenty of action in front of him. Stolarz basically stole two points on Friday, when he turned aside 37 shots in a 2-1 win over Springfield. The towering netminder wasn't his best on Saturday but did make 26 saves to keep things interesting in a 5-4 shootout loss to Bridgeport. And then on Sunday, he was sharp yet again despite allowing four goals. He stopped 34 of 38 shots to earn his 17th win over the season. In all, Stolarz is 17-11-4 with a .914 save percentage and 2.56 goals-against average in 33 games in 2015-16.

Philippe Myers, D, Rouyn-Noranda Huskies
Myers looked like he was going to have a strong week. The towering blueliner notched an assist in a 5-4 loss to Aube-Kubel and Val-d'Or on Wednesday but was one of Rouyn-Noranda's best players. He finished that game a plus-2 and was a force physically. But then the 19-year-old fell ill and was forced to sit out Friday's 4-1 win over Saint John and Saturday's 3-1 victory over Gatineau. Myers, who earned himself an entry-level contract, has been a huge bright spot for the Huskies in 2015-16, registering 14 goals, 22 assists and a plus-36 rating in 52 games.

Merrick Madsen, G, Harvard Crimson
Madsen was superb in Friday's 2-2 tie with Cornell on Friday, turning aside 31 of 33 shot attempts fired his way. The sophomore netminder wasn't as sharp against Colgate but did make 26 saves as Harvard cruised to a 7-4 victory on Saturday. Madsen, a sixth-round pick in 2013, has been lights out for the Crimson in 2015-16, posting a 14-4-3 record with four shutouts, a .930 save percentage and 1.99 goals-against average.

Cooper Marody, C/RW, University of Michigan Wolverines
After a bout with mono that cost him six games and sidelined him for over a month, Marody made his return for the Wolverines on Friday night. He made quite an impact, too. The freshman forward collected two assists and finished the night with a plus-3 rating as Michigan dispatched Ferris State, 5-2. Prior to his illness, Marody was struggling to produce. He had just one goal over nine games and seemed to be fighting the puck a little bit. The 2015 sixth-round pick has still managed to post eight goals and eight assists in 22 games overall, however.

Petr Straka, LW, Lehigh Valley Phantoms
Straka has yet to score since returning to the lineup but he's beginning to look more like himself. He piled up five assists in three games for the Phantoms last week and has fired 24 shots on goal in his last six after missing time with a lower-body injury.
