Future Flyers Report: Travis Konecny's point streak ends

Share

We continue our weekly check-in on the Flyers’ prospects currently playing in the AHL, overseas or at the junior and college levels.

In this edition, we’ll start with a youngster who had an impressive run come to end.

Let’s get to it.

Travis Konecny, C/RW, Sarnia Sting
Last week, we watched Shayne Gostisbehere's 15-game NHL point streak get snapped by the Carolina Hurricanes. This week, Konecny's 15-game OHL point streak ended in a 5-2 win over Guelph on Sunday. During his hot stretch, the 2015 first-round pick racked up 12 goals and 17 assists and is up to 44 points overall since joining Sarnia. Though he was held without a point Sunday, Konecny still had three markers and two helpers in three games last week. In 54 games overall this season, he's posted 26 goals and 63 assists. Konecny doesn’t have a huge frame, but he looks like a man playing among boys at the junior level right now.

Ivan Provorov, D, Brandon Wheat Kings
We could go on and on about Provorov but we're going to break down one play specifically. In Saturday's 4-3 loss to Medicine Hat, Provorov scored his 14th goal of the season. It all started with the 2015 first-round pick stripping an opposing player of the puck behind the net in Brandon's zone. He pulled off a spin move to elude an attacker along the boards and proceeded to effortlessly glide his way through the neutral zone. After breaking into the offensive zone past two defenders, he got a quick, hard shot off from the perimeter. The play continued as the Wheat Kings surged on the puck and the five-man unit began to cycle the puck. Provorov, naturally, got himself in perfect position at the top of the circle to receive a pass and sent a laser to the back of the net. All his talent on display in one shift. He has 56 points and a plus-45 rating in 53 games for the Wheat Kings.

Travis Sanheim, D, Calgary Hitmen
The 19-year-old has been a model of consistency for Calgary over the past two months. Sanheim's recorded at least one point in 23 of his last 25 games and has been a stalwart on defense. During that stretch, he's scored four goals and assisted 27 more. The 2014 first-round pick is one of the WHL's top scoring defensemen this season, posting 10 goals and 53 points in just 43 games.

Anthony Stolarz, G, Lehigh Valley Phantoms
How was Stolarz rewarded for his best weekend of the season? A 1-1-1 record. The Edison, New Jersey native was spectacular in back-to-back-to-back starts for Lehigh Valley over the weekend. He made 36 saves on 38 shots in a 3-2 shootout loss to Hartford on Friday, had 40 saves in a 2-1 loss to Utica on Saturday and turned aside 24 attempts in a 2-1 win over Hartford on Saturday. He really deserved a victory in all three starts for keeping each contest as close as they were. But I digress. Stolarz is now 18-12-5 with a .918 save percentage and 2.47 goals-against average in 36 appearances in 2015-16.

Philippe Myers, D, Rouyn-Noranda Huskies
Now that's how you make a return. Myers, who sat out a few games with an illness, returned to the Huskies' lineup on Thursday and posted a goal and two assists in a 7-6 win over Moncton. The towering defenseman had another helper in Friday's 5-2 victory over Cape Breton and now has 15 goals and 25 assists to go along with a plus-40 rating in 54 games this season.

Nicolas Aube-Kubel, C/RW, Val-d'Or Foreurs
Aube-Kubel earned an assist in Friday's 5-3 win over Moncton for his 76th point of the season. Saturday's game against Cape Breton, however, is one he'd probably like to forget. Actually, everyone associated with the Foreurs would probably like to forget the 8-1 loss. Aube-Kubel was a minus-4 as Val-d'Or was outclassed in every aspect of the game for 60 minutes.

Taylor Leier, LW, Lehigh Valley Phantoms
Leier wasn't able to find his way on the scoresheet in back-to-back losses on Friday and Saturday but it wasn't from a lack of effort. He was absolutely buzzing in those defeats and threw seven shots on goal. So it wasn't a surprise that the 22-year-old broke through on Sunday, scoring his 18th tally in a 2-1 Phantoms victory. In 52 games for Lehigh Valley, Leier has 39 points, a plus-5 rating and 151 shots on goal.

Felix Sandstrom, G, Sweden Brynäs IF
Sandstrom, 19, made a relief appearance for Brynäs IF in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to Växjö, making four saves on five shots. The young Swede then started his team's back-to-back set with Linköping over the weekend. The first game was a rough one for Sandstrom. He was lit up for six goals on just 24 shots in an ugly 6-3 defeat. The 2015 third-round pick quickly bounced back, however, turning aside 30 shots and even earning an assist in a 4-2 win in the rematch on Sunday. Sandstrom is holding his own in his first full season as a professional overseas, posting a 10-9-2 record with a .904 save percentage and 2.64 goals-against average in 22 games played.

Robert Hagg, D, Lehigh Valley Phantoms
This was the weekend Hagg needed. He was finally able to string together three consistent performances in a row and actually made some positive contributions. The Swede notched an assist, just his fourth of the season, on the Phantoms' lone goal Saturday and was active in Sunday's win over Hartford, firing four shots on target and finishing with a plus-2 rating.

Radel Fazleev, LW, Calgary Hitmen
Another strong week for Fazleev. The Russian winger had a goal and two assists in Tuesday's 6-2 win over Portland and added another helper in Saturday's 4-3 victory over Swift Current. He currently leads the Hitmen in scoring with 63 points (18 goals) in 51 games in 2015-16.
