BOX SCORE

The Flyers began a rather crucial weekend of back-to-back games on Saturday afternoon with a crushing 2-1 overtime loss against the New Jersey Devils at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Devils came into play with 61 points — four more than the Flyers in the Metropolitan Division standings. The Flyers began play six points out of the wild card.

Jersey got quite an effort in net from Cory Schneider with 31 saves. He had a 1-0 lead going into the third period.

A hooking call gave the Devils a power play with 2:29 left in OT which resulted in the game-winner from Adam Henrique.

Shayne Gostisbehere’s power-play goal at 3:39 tied the game and set a new Flyers franchise record for points in 11 straight games by a rookie (see video).

Notable goals
Gostisbehere's historic goal in the third period broke Mikael Renberg's record from 1993-94.

Goalie report
Schneider was outstanding in the second period, as the Flyers tested him well with 16 shots. Michal Neuvirth made his first start since Jan. 27 after missing five games with an injury. Neuvirth faced only 24 shots.

Power play
The Flyers' first one was horrific but their second saw Schneider have to make four saves in succession. For the second time this week, the Flyers had a four-minute power play get chopped in half with their own penalty, this time because of a Wayne Simmonds interference call. Ghost’s shot inside the left post was his sixth power-play goal of the season.

Penalty kill
The Flyers had shut an opponent out in three of the previous four games but didn’t get much help from Radko Gudas or Brandon Manning. Not that any of the penalty killers could have kept up with the play anyway, as the Devils were simply too quick for the Flyers.

Fights
There’s never any fights between these two clubs. Too much discipline on New Jersey’s side.

Injury update
Michael Del Zotto was injured late in the third period and did not return the game. He was involved in a collision in front of Neuvirth and the Flyers' net.

After the game, general manager Ron Hextall said Del Zotto will be out indefinitely with an upper-body injury (see story). A few hours later, the Flyers recalled defenseman Andrew MacDonald from AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley.

Scratches
Forwards Sean Couturier (right foot), Scott Laughton (healthy) and Matt Read (healthy) and defenseman Evgeny Medvedev (healthy) were all scratched.

Up next
The Flyers traveled to New York after the game where they will meet the Rangers on Valentine’s night at Madison Square Garden.
