BOX SCORE

These were not your ordinary Calgary Flames.

Maybe the Flyers initially thought they were, but Bob Hartley’s group is very much alive in the Western Conference playoff hunt and it hounded Craig Berube’s team on Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center.

A lethargic start by the Flyers cost them as they trailed 2-0 going into the third period before turning the game around, but still lost 3-2 in overtime. They needed both points in the wild-card chase and got just one.

Jiri Hudler scored the game-winner with 3:37 left in OT.

They had a wild finish with a goal from Sean Couturier in the first minute of the third period, and then an apparent tying goal from Nick Schultz on a crease scrum four minutes later was denied on review because of contact with the goalie.

Mark Streit got it back a few minutes later to make it 2-2.

Flyers goalie Steve Mason was trying to get to .500 (12-13-8).

Notable goals
Ryan White’s nice centering pass through the crease for Couturier made it 2-1 game a minute into the third period. White worked for puck and simply made a brilliant pass for Couturier’s 13th goal of the season to cut the Flyers’ deficit.

Goalie report
Karri Ramo had some flurries to handle but the Flyers didn’t test him with their “A” game until the third period. Mason didn't face as many difficult shots.

Power play
Calgary had sticks in the lane all night and seemed to really frustrate the Flyers. There was a bit of indecision on the power play whether to shoot or pass because of such. The Flyers and Flames were both 0 for 2 on the man advantage.

Penalty kill
The Flyers were not overly taxed here, but did good work on two kills.

Milestone
Claude Giroux picked up his 300th assist on Streit’s third-period goal.

Blocked shots
Calgary frustrated the Flyers with 23 through two periods and 26 for the game.

Scratches
Defenseman Nicklas Grossmann (head/shoulder) and forward Zac Rinaldo (healthy).

Up next
Ken Hitchcock and his St. Louis Blue visit the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday. The Flyers defeated the Blues last season here.
