BOX SCORE

The Flyers were hoping Valtteri Filppula might make a tad of a difference on the scoreboard when they traded for him at Wednesday's deadline.

Thirty-four shots into the game, Filppula drew the Flyers even midway into the third period of Thursday's eventual 2-1 shootout win over the Florida Panthers at the Wells Fargo Center.

Jakub Voracek scored the game-winner.

It was Filppula's eighth goal overall this season and first as a member of the Flyers. He was between Brayden Schenn and Voracek as the club's new second-line center.

The Flyers slightly closed the gap on the second wild card. They began play four points out and now trail the Islanders and Maple Leafs by three.

Steve Mason started in goal for the Flyers. It was the first time he started consecutive games since Jan. 22-25. He had a spectacular save on Aleksander Barkov in the final seconds of regulation.

The Flyers had 49 shots.

Notable goals
Filppula's first goal as a Flyer. He had three shots in the game.

Shorthanded goal
The Panthers embarrassed the Flyers in the second period during a PP for the orange and black. Claude Giroux won a defensive draw, tried to hit Schenn with a stretch pass and had it picked off by Florida defenseman Aaron Ekblad. He then put a great move to get around Giroux and beat Mason from distance for a 1-0 lead.

Goalie report
Mason did not appear to look good on Ekblad's shot from almost 50 feet but the Panthers' defenseman put it in a perfect spot. Mason finished with 39 saves.

Power play
The Flyers wasted a two-man advantage for 1:05 in the opening period. There was too much wasted setup time as well. They gave up the shorthanded goal, too.

The power play was just bad all around with an 0-for-4 performance.

Penalty kill
The Flyers did a good job on the first one early in the game. There wasn't much work overall as Panthers were 0 for 2.

Injuries
Panthers starting goalie Roberto Luongo suffered a lower-body injury in the first period going down on a shot from Schenn. James Reimer started the second period and finished the game.

In the third period, Mason collided with Reilly Smith. Mason was checked by the trainer and remained in the game.

Fights
There was a major scrum near the very end of the second period. Incredibly, even Jaromir Jagr was involved and got a roughing penalty (see video).

Scratches
Forwards Travis Konecny (ankle/knee), Michael Raffl (left knee) and Dale Weise (healthy).

Up next
The Flyers will practice Friday at Skate Zone at 11 a.m. and then head for Washington to meet the Capitals on Saturday night.
