BOX SCORE

The Flyers' quest to make some noise at the end of October continued Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center against the Los Angeles Kings.

They gave the defending Stanley Cup champions all they could handle with a 3-2 overtime win -- their third straight victory. Brayden Schenn won it on a breakaway goal at 2:36 in the extra frame.

That puts the Flyers at 4-3-2 with one game left before the calendar hits November.

Their October portion of the schedule is arguably their hardest in 15 years to start an NHL season, as they have now faced five playoff clubs representing four Cups since 2010.

Ray Emery made his third straight start in net for the Flyers and went up against Jonathan Quick. Emery did not make three starts in succession all of last season. The Flyers have at least a point in all five of his appearances this season.

Emery had an incredible second-period save, sitting on his butt when Kings center Jarret Stoll fired from the high slot.

Emery raised his glove and the puck redirected off it behind the net. He robbed Tyler Toffoli with his left pad in the third period, as well.

Mike Richards' rebound at 5:01 of the third period tied the game at 2-2.

With nine minutes left, Jakub Voracek ripped one from distance off the right post.

Notable goals
How about Chris VandeVelde humming down the slot in the final 43.7 seconds of the first period in time to take Voracek’s pass from behind the net and burying it for his first goal of the season and a 2-1 Flyers lead?

Shots
The Flyers came out firing on Quick from every angle and every spot, even wraparounds (Voracek). They jumped out 7-2 in shots and scored on their ninth shot less than six minutes into the game.

Scoring touch
Michael Raffl gave the Flyers an early 1-0 lead. He has five goals this season, three of which have come in the last two games.

Goalie report
Quick started for the Kings and had 40 saves while Emery had 38 saves.

Power play
The Kings and Flyers were both 0 for 2.

Penalty kill
The Flyers did a very good job of limiting quality chances by the Kings, whose power play was ranked just 18th best in the league.

Scratches
Blair Jones (healthy); Vinny Lecavalier (left foot), Braydon Coburn (left foot) and Andrew MacDonald (right knee/leg).

Up next
The Flyers take on the Lightning Thursday night in Tampa Bay to start a brief two-game road trip that concludes Saturday against the Florida Panthers.
