BOX SCORE

This time, Steve Mason didn’t wilt.

The veteran goaltender had a handful of brilliant saves on Thursday night as the Flyers defeated the pesky Winnipeg Jets, 5-2, at Wells Fargo Center.

The Flyers twice had two-goal leads and twice the Jets came within a goal of tying even though the orange and black scored two goals on two shots just 34 seconds apart to open the game.

Mason’s third-period saves on Mark Scheifele and Nikolaj Ehlers saved two points for the Flyers.

Dustin Byfuglien cut that deficit in half in the second period before Mark Streit’s second goal this month from the point made it 3-1.

Earlier in the day, coach Dave Hakstol announced he was benching young defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere for the first time in his career while admitting he has some defensive issues to iron out.

Gostisbehere replacement, Andrew MacDonald, assisted on Wayne Simmonds’ clutch rebound goal in the final period that gave the Flyers a 4-2 lead.

Greetings
Flyers rookie Travis Konency said hello to fellow rook Patric Laine with a deliberate slash across the back of the knees in the first period, giving the Jets a power play. The two were going at it along the boards.

Notable goals
It was an absolutely sensational, diving play along the right boards by Matt Read, who stretched out to fling the puck across the middle for Michael Raffl’s second goal in two games that made it 2-0 in the first period.

Goalie report
Mason had 58 minutes of terrific hockey against Ottawa and two minutes when it went to naught. Mason again had a very good game but this time he followed through to the very end.

Mason had an outstanding chest save on Scheifele in the third period with the Flyers leading, 3-2, as well as a glove save on Ehlers soon after.

Streit’s goal on Connor Hellebuyck was a knuckler.

Power play
The Flyers didn’t have one until late in the game.

Penalty kill
Two of the Jets' best scoring chances came after their first power play expired in this game and Mason made two good saves.

Fights
It was Tough Guy Heritage Night but there were no actual fights on the ice. Simmonds and Adam Lowly locked up with bear hugs but no punches were thrown.

Scratches. Defensemen Gostisbehere and Nick Schultz (both healthy), forwards Boyd Gordon (back spasms) and Roman Lyubimov (healthy) and goalie Michal Neuvirth (knee).

Up next
The Flyers practice Friday at 11 a.m. at Skate Zone. They host Tampa Bay at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
