BOX SCORE

DETROIT — The Flyers weren’t shut out Wednesday night.

The result, however, was worse than the blanking they received two nights earlier.

Pavel Datsyuk scored twice during the Red Wings’ three-goal second period and Detroit coasted to a 5-2 victory over the Flyers at Joe Louis Arena.

The Flyers, two days removed from an overtime shutout loss to the New York Islanders, had few good scoring chances after their host took the lead for good midway through the second.

The Flyers’ scoring drought passed the 100-minute mark before Claude Giroux ended it with a slap shot past Detroit’s Jimmy Howard early in the second. He swiped the puck in the neutral zone and skated in for an unassisted marker; his eighth of the season.

Little else went right for the Flyers the rest of the night. Tomas Jurco scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second on a power play and Datsyuk added the next two to help send the Flyers to their sixth straight road loss.

His first goal, a whistling slap shot five seconds into Jakub Voracek’s holding penalty, ended goalie Steve Mason’s night after just 11 saves. Ray Emery skated in to finish the game with eight minutes left in the second and allowed Datsyuk’s second marker almost seven minutes later.

Voracek added his eighth goal seconds into a third-period power play from Wayne Simmonds and Giroux, but the Flyers never got another good scoring chance.

The Flyers pulled Emery with two minutes to play in regulation, but it backfired when Henrik Zetterberg broke away for an easy empty-net goal.

The Flyers spent most of the first six minutes of the game in the Detroit zone and missed a great opportunity when Voracek’s point-blank shot dinged the left post and bounced away. Howard later stopped Giroux on a great scoring chance.

Power play
The Flyers finally broke through 13 minutes into the third when Voracek knocked home a slap shot to cut the lead to 4-2. The goal came seconds after the Red Wings’ Niklas Kronwall went to the box for holding.

Detroit players served three penalties in the first two periods, but the man advantage didn’t help the Flyers, who failed to register a shot on goal in any of the power plays.

Penalty kill
The Flyers allowed five shots on Detroit’s first two power plays and finally got caught on the third when Datsyuk’s slap shot whistled over Mason’s right shoulder.

Between the posts
Mason (4-7-2) didn’t have a good look at either of the Red Wings’ first two goals.

Stephen Weiss redirected a shot past him midway through the first and Mason was screened by a crowd of four players when Jurco scored the go-ahead goal in the second. Coach Craig Berube pulled him after Datsyuk’s power-play goal 12 minutes into the second.

Emery made nine saves in relief.

Throwing hands
Sean Courturier and Detroit’s Kyle Quincey got into a dustup near the Red Wings’ goal late in the second. The two spent nearly two minutes holding on to each other’s sweaters but neither man landed a significant blow. Each drew 5-minute fighting penalties.

Simmonds and Jonathan Ericsson exchanged words shortly before Voracek’s goal but were quickly separated.

Trainer’s room
LW Michael Raffl was back in the lineup Wednesday after missing eight games with a lower-body injury. Berube said during the morning skate that Raffl would play only if he could warm up without pain.

The Flyers scratched D Luke Schenn, who’d been playing on the fourth forward line during Raffl’s absence. RW Jason Akeson and D Carlo Colaiacovo joined him in casual clothes Wednesday night.

Up next
The Flyers return to the Wells Fargo Center for a post-Thanksgiving matinee against the New York Rangers. The puck drops at 1 p.m.
