With the Flyers' defense fully healthy, it’s going to be interesting to see who sits out as the seventh man once the schedule resumes Thursday against the San Jose Sharks at the Wells Fargo Center.
Erik Gustafsson sat out the final game before the break as a healthy scratch against Calgary.
Gustafsson is more mobile and better with the puck than Andrej Meszaros, while the latter is a better physical presence in front of the net. Both players have spent time as healthy scratches this season. Gustafsson has appeared in 26 games, while Meszaros has played in 35.
Given the fact the Flyers’ fourth line averages about nine minutes even strength, why not play with seven defensemen?
Berube said he’s considered it.
“I’m not a big fan of it,” Berube said. “I think the rotation hurts some of your defensemen who are used to going out every other shift.
“It gets them out of a rotation. Sometimes it may come down to that. I’m not sure yet … We have thought about it.”
