NHL Trade Deadline Roundup: Ducks acquire Wisniewski

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Blue Jackets traded away one of their most productive defensemen. But general manager Jarmo Kekalainen says younger replacements are already on the roster.

The club dealt power-play specialist James Wisniewski and a third-round pick in 2015 to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday for left wing Rene Bourque, center William Karlsson and a second-round pick this summer.

Kekalainen said there was a simple reason why he made the deal.

"(Because of) the long-term plans for our defense," he said. "We have some really good defensemen emerging into a similar role that James filled with our team (see full story)."

Islanders: Backup goalie Johnson sent to Buffalo
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The New York Islanders have acquired goalie Michal Neuvirth from the Buffalo Sabres for goaltender Chad Johnson and a 2016 third-round pick.

The Sabres have now traded two goalies this season after sending Jhonas Enroth to Dallas last month. Buffalo also traded forward Matt Flynn to Montreal for a 2016 fifth-round pick Monday as they continue to rebuild through youth.

The Islanders also acquired forward Tyler Kennedy from San Jose on Monday for a conditional 2016 third-round pick, and swapped minor league forwards with Vancouver, exchanging Cory Conacher for Dustin Jeffrey (see full story).

Blues: Jokinen picked up from Leafs
ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Blues made their third move on the trade deadline, acquiring forward Olli Jokinen from the Toronto Maple Leafs for forward Joakim Lindstrom and a conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2016.

The 36-year-old Jokinen is making his third stop this season after 48 games with Nashville and six with Toronto. The Blues are his 10th team in 17 seasons. He has three goals, four assists and 28 penalty minutes.

Lindstrom had three goals and three assists in 34 games with St. Louis (see full story).

Penguins: Lovejoy and Cole arrive in separate deals
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins gave their defense an experienced upgrade on Monday, acquiring veteran defensemen Ben Lovejoy from Anaheim and Ian Cole from St. Louis.

The 31-year-old Lovejoy returns to Pittsburgh after spending two-plus seasons with the Ducks. Pittsburgh sent former first-round pick Simon Despres to Anaheim. The 23-year-old Despres led the Penguins in hits but struggled with consistency. Lovejoy had one goal and 10 assists in 40 games with Anaheim.

Pittsburgh sent Robert Bortuzzo and a seventh-round pick in the 2016 draft to the Blues in exchange for Cole. The 26-year-old Cole has four goals and five assists in 54 games for St. Louis this season. Cole's plus-16 plus/minus ratio ranked third on the team at the time of the trade (see full story).

Devils: Zidlicky off to Detroit
NEWARK, N.J. — The New Jersey Devils have traded defenseman Marek Zidlicky to the Detroit Red Wings for a conditional draft pick.

Zidlicky's agent Allan Walsh disclosed the deal in a tweet Monday, hours before the NHL trade deadline. Zidlicky had to waive a no-trade clause in his contract that expires after this season.

The Devils will receive a third-round draft pick in 2016, but they will also get a second rounder this year if Detroit reaches the Eastern Conference finals. If the Red Wings reach the Stanley Cup Finals, the third rounder next year becomes a second-round pick, but the second-round choice in 2015 is wiped out (see full story).

Canadiens: Petry acquired from Edmonton
MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens have made the first major move on the morning of the NHL's trade deadline day by acquiring Jeff Petry from the Edmonton Oilers for draft picks.

The defenseman was considered one of the most likely players to be dealt before Monday's 3 p.m. EST deadline. Petry can become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

In exchange for the 27-year-old player, Montreal sent a 2015 second-round draft choice and a conditional fifth-round pick to Edmonton (see full story).
