NHL Wrap: Avalanche top Stars in overtime

DALLAS -- Paul Stastny's second goal of the game 3:36 into overtime gave the Colorado Avalanche and troubled goalie Semyon Varlamov a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Friday night.

Stastny fired a shot from the left circle past goalie Kari Lehtonen to beat the Stars, who had rallied from a 2-0 deficit. The goal was his fourth of the season.

Dallas had scored twice in the third period against Varlamov, who two days earlier spent the night in jail because of an alleged assault against his girlfriend.

The Stars, who recorded just 12 shots on goal in the first two periods, began their comeback with Alex Goligoski's goal at 3:57 of the third period. Tyler Seguin tied it at 16:31.

Stastny had made it 1-0 at 8:22 of the first period. Gabriel Landeskog doubled Colorado's lead with 1:19 left in the second period (see full recap).

Neilsen gives Isles SO win
OTTAWA, Ontario -- Frans Neilsen scored the tying goal in the third period and then netted the only goal of the shootout as the New York Islanders beat the Ottawa Senators 5-4 on Friday night.

Neilsen moved in on goalie Robin Lehner and put a backhand in on the Islanders' second and last shot of the shootout.

The Islanders (5-5-3) outshot the Senators 57-31 and got goals from Matt Martin, John Tavares and Pierre-Marc Bouchard in regulation. Evgeni Nabokov made 27 saves for New York, which rallied from a pair of two-goal deficits.

Erik Condra, Bobby Ryan, Mika Zibanejad and Clarke MacArthur scored for the Senators (4-6-3). Lehner making the biggest contribution with 53 saves, including one off Thomas Vanek on a breakaway in overtime (see full recap).

Red Wings edge Flames
CALGARY, Alberta -- Justin Abdelkader scored the winning goal with 3:24 left to help the Detroit Red Wings edge the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Friday night.

Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg each had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings (8-4-2), who were coming off a 2-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday. Tomas Tatar also scored, and Niklas Kronwall and Todd Bertuzzi both had two assists.

The Red Wings will continue their four-game trip through Western Canada on Saturday when they visit the Edmonton Oilers.

Chris Butler, Sean Monahan and Curtis Glencross scored for the Flames (5-6-2), who went 1-2 on a three-game homestand. Jiri Hudler finished with two assists.

Calgary will now head out on a four-game trip, starting on Sunday in Chicago and finishing with stops at Minnesota, St. Louis and Colorado (see full recap).
