New York Islanders defeat the Flyers 4-3 via the shootout.
All three Isles goals in regulation were redirected by one or more of Ilya
Bryzgalov’s teammates, who were often on their heels at their own end for long
stretches of time. Claude Giroux potted this amazing shot during the shootout,
but none of Philly’s other three attempts came very close. Meanwhile Braydon Coburn was lost to an upper-body injury, and the season continues versus
the Boston Bruins on Saturday afternoon.
At least the Flyers showed some heart, battling back to tie
the game during a 6-on-4 with 30 seconds left. Scott Hartnell finally slammed the puck home after a wild scrum in front of the net, picking up his second of the night (numbers three and four this season) in what was probably his best game of the season to date. There have been some strong individual efforts this season, only rarely all on the same night.
On a happier note, Opening Day for the Phillies is on
Monday. It can’t come soon enough.
