Excitement nearing with March on horizon

Spring is right around the corner and when March arrives on Friday, I believe there is no better month for sports fans.

There is a reason why they call the NCAA tournament "March Madness" and this year in Philadelphia, the Wells Fargo Center hosts the second and third rounds, which is great for local college basketball fans. Of course, there is nothing like seeing your own school in the Big Dance and the Big 5 could very easily have three schools in the tournament. La Salle, Temple and Villanova have all played well of late, improving its chances of being included in this year’s field of 68.

The anticipation of which school makes it and which one ends up on the outside looking in is all part of March Madness -- from the conference tournament upsets, to the non-stop Big Dance, which occupies a large chunk of the month.

Beyond the NCAA tournament, what makes March so special is that every Philadelphia team is in action in one form or another.

The Flyers play 14 games in March, nine of which come at home. The Sixers have 17 games in the month, including eight at the Wells Fargo Center. For NHL and NBA teams, March is when a serious playoff push begins, resulting in more competitive matchups and better games.

In March, the games don’t matter much for baseball teams competing at spring training, but just the thought of baseball resuming reminds us all of warmer weather and Summer months ahead. For years, I covered spring training and always left Clearwater with tremendous enthusiasm for the start of the season.

Even the Eagles are busy in March. In past years, Andy Reid conducted mini camps in March, although Chip Kelly has yet to announce his plans for the month.

No matter what sport you like, there is something going taking place. Philadelphia is a great sports town and because of the fans' passion, Comcast Sportsnet and CSNPhilly.com have thrived over the years.

We get excited just the way you do, but for me, nothing beats March.
